This kit
or
This one?
And why? I know the first has more power, but it's $250 more. I know I can upgrade later for the background light for about $230. I'm going to be shooting the Miss Western NY Pageant August 20th and Oct 8th. I want something that will be effective, but I don't want to buy more than I will need since I am not doing a TON of portraiture right now.
Discussion? Help?

If you've got the money, I'd go with the 3 strobes...
But.. (There's always a but)
If you're shooting a large event with these, and want to cover a stage situation, I'd go with two more powerful strobes if you can get em for the money. 320ws is not that powerful, and you'll struggle to get F/8 with a large softbox at iso100..
And once you've got the strobes, you'll want a large softbox. :-). Brollies are nice and portable, and can give great results, but a big collapsible softbox is a better key light for portraiture, IMHO.
Cheers, Me.

In a dynamic situation such as a beauty pageant, where your subjects will probably be moving about, wouldn't it be better to get a pair of 550's and a couple of assistants? You could trigger wirelessly then. Just a thought |

550's are not even in the same league power-wise.

Honestly, I'd want something with a modelling light brighter than 40W. Something in the 250W range and that has its brightness proportional to the power setting for the head.
