I will be taking an extensive trip next month and wondered what the general population out there did for storage. Is it better to get something from the manufacturer of the camera, like the Nikon Coolwalker, or go after market with something like the Epson P-2000. Or, where I already have an iPod 30GB, would it be better to just get an adapter for my camera for that. Any ideas?

My preference would be a laptop or the Epson P-2000, in that order.

Well, I would have to agree on the laptop, except for price and size. I don't have one right now. So far Epson seems to be my first choice. All the reviews that I read on the iPod stuff are pretty bad. Any comments form people that have these items already?

True, the laptop is bigger and more expensive, but for $799 my 12" iBook gives me a much larger screen, the ability to edit and upload photos on the road, CD-RW for backup, and DVD playback to entertain the kids on trips. Unless you really need something pocket-sized, that's a lot of extra functionality.

I have never even considered an apple before, which is ridiculous since I do digital imaging AND digital video. I have always been so used to having a PC. Maybe I'll have to look in to that. On your iBook, how does it compare to a Windows based laptop?

I have an Apacer Share-Steno USB OTG bevice with build in 40Gb HDD.
I paid a littlebit more then 100 Euro for it including the HDD.
I hope I have enough storge for my 5 week trip to Thailand and shooting everything Raw plus having 2 model shoots....

I wish I had the money to buy a laptop. That would be so easy, and PP on the road also sounds great....

Sent you a PM, Scott. This might be a no-brainer. ;-)

In what way? It's small, light, quick, virus-proof, and with iPhoto built-in, a breeze to use.

I have the Nixvue 20gb that we took on a 10 day trip through the Canyons but if I have the chance the next time we go on vacation it will be a laptop with a large HD, wireless and ethernet network capibility for Hotel connections! :)

I have used, on three long trips, the Addonics MFR DVD+/-R/RW, a 25-in-1 Multi Function Recorder. It burns to CD or DVD. Reads many different cards.

Addonics 25-in-1 Multi Function Recorder

I shoot with a 4gb Microdrive then burn it to DVD. It does take about 2.5 hours to burn the 4gb drive to DVD. Now I have second Microdrive so I can continue to shoot while the first is being burnt to DVD.

I have a P2000 and I can download 13 1gb cards on one charge. I shoot RAW. I can listen to my tunes on it too. The picture is very nice. The only downside other than price is that you cant make RAW file display in a "hands off" slide show, you have to "click" through them. I still like it alot though.

On our last trip we used a Roadstor portable CD burner and CD/DVD player. It worked without a hitch. Just put your storage card in and hit the download button. Some reviewers say this device will not work on ships at sea and other moving transportation. This is absolutely not true if the device is working properly. It works on cruise ships, golf carts and rocking chairs (my personal test during the free return period). The only thing I consider a drawback is that to verify the download you have to play the CD on a TV (cables included in the box). It is small and light and comes in a custom case just big enough for all its pieces and parts.

I am planning on getting the ibook but where did you get it for $799.?
I have only seen it for $999.

Good old Amazon. Happy shopping. (Coincidentally, one of my co-workers just ordered one today).

The only thing to consider with that one is that for the extra $200. you get a faster processor(1.33vs1.2) , 256 more RAM and 10GB more hard drive through the MAC store- both have free shipping
Decisions decisions....

If I go from PC to Mac, and I backup files/photos with my PC Burner, are those files/photos transferable on a Mac. Basic, yes, but important to now.

Of course. A JPEG, RAW or TIFF file is the same format whether on a Mac or PC. A Microsoft Word document on a PC is the same format as MS Word on a Mac, etc.

The 1.33 is a newer model that was annouced yesterday, so Amazon doesn't have them yet. The difference between 1.33 and 1.2 isn't really noticeable, and 512mb of RAM is about $58 at owcomputing.com. 10gb more is nice, but for the money you save you can buy a portable external drive or media viewer and be better off overall. Both places have free shipping, but you pay sales tax at the Apple Store.

I have it...it's awesome and I use it a lot!! (I discovered it by an earlier thread on this forum) 7 minutes to burn a 512Mb Flash Card and it spans so you can work with larger cards too! In fact, I rarely download directly onto my computer anymore even when I'm home....I just burn 2 copies of each card.
