I'm off to get a root canal. Wish me luck. If you don't see me post again, it's because I didn't pull through. I bequeath all my silly stuff to Strikeslip and all my challenge entries to the members from Iceland (to collectively lower their average score).
I will try to get the assistant to shoot some pics.
I'm such a dental wimp!

Just ask for the laughing gas first then you won't feel a thing.

Wooohooooo! I survived! And they gave me some pain killers and made the mistake of warning me that I shouldn't take them with alcohol because it magnifies the effects. Wooooohoooo. Nothin like Vicodin and a beer chaser.
AND - - look how much better my teeth look!

That's some pretty nasty teeth there (or lack of!!)
I've had a root canal before and it ain't bad! If you have a good dentist (like I do) then you'll be more than fine!
Best of luck!

ask your dentist for someting stronger than novacane (sp) they have sometihng that works real fast at numbing the pain, but it only last a short time.
I had a tooth I wanted pulled cause of too many problems with it. Medicated fillings and such. The dentist wanted to do a root canal, i said NO, just yank the tooth out. I explained to him the last 10 years have been horrible and I wanted it over. he suggested an additional numbing shot.
This dentist put me on the gas and hit me with a "little hammer" (the numbing stuff) and my tooth has been great ever since.
edit : oppsss, looks like im a day late, sorry
James

Ok, those aren't my real teeth. Just trying not to let Brad down. ;-)
Yes, I had a good Dentist. I think they are now trained to talk to you alot and make you comfortable and let you know what they are doing like every step of the way. And I must say, the woman dental assistant was as impressive as the Dentist. They worked together like a choreographed dance of drilling, suction, poking and prodding. Since I laid there for over 2 hours, I had nothing to do but sit there being impressed by how well they did their job.
I felt no pain at all during and after. I actually left there pretty happy about how not in pain I was. They gave me this brochure on after-care and the first Q & A was: "Will I be in pain when the anisthetic wears off?" - - "Yes." Not "It depends", not "Maybe" - but "Yes." So I stop by the drug store to get my prescription and the pain starts to creep in. By the time I got home I was wiped out. Popped a pill and crashed for about 4 hours. Got up and feel pretty good though.
So there's my little dental adventure story. I didn't get any pics, but I kept thinking of what great ones I could've got while I was laying there.
My fear of Dentists came mostly from 10 years in the Navy where I saw some pretty gruesome things - and many mistakes on people. I avoided them like the plague.
Thanks for humoring me.

My 10 years as a dental "Guinea Pig" in the Navy took it's toll here too.
Mistakes is not the word for it.
Been paying for it ever since.

root canal? i dunno if i've ever had one of those. the dentist never scares me, it's just uncomfortable. like i always have the problem where i can't swallow because my mouth is open. i try to tell them that saliva is going into my throat, but i can't talk because my mouth can't move. i feel like im dying. what are you supposed to do when that happens? it's happened to me many times

Yeah, that part sucks. I just do my best to swallow wihtout disturbing anything. I am also very careful not to makes any sudden moves when he's got that shrieking drill in my mouth. ;-)
Brad: Sorry to hear about your Navy dental experiences. We will have to have some beers and swap horror stories next time I'm down there.
