Outback photo has real world identical comparison shots at 100% crop. Looking at the two, I'd say I prefer the way the 20D resolves the image. I wonder if the labels describing which shot was with which camera, I don't think people can accurately guess. They conclude that the images are very similar as well.

oops, sorry for the typo, I know it's Eos 1D, not D1.

I'd still rather have the 1DII... for many reasons aside from the images produced. Heck... I picked the original 1D over the 20D for some of those reasons.

the only reason the 20d is more popular is because its a lot cheaper, supports EFS lenses and has automatic functions

It depends if you need a professional 8fps camera. If you do, the 1DmkII will be a much better camera. Of course it's a lot more expensive.

I bought a second hand 1D recently, and it many way it's much better than the 20D, even though it's significantly older.

Oh, I see kyebosh said similar. :-)

I've said it , and I'll say it again.... a person who compares an EOS-1 camera to any other camera in the range....never held or used an EOS-1 camera.

4 sure, and on another note the 8 frames per second is just scraping the iceberg for me the firewire out is a must for teathered capturing.

Yup, Apples and Oranges...

Fantastic AI Servo Focus, Fast and accurate 45 pt AF with both horizontal and vertical sensors, built like a tank, Shutter life of 200,000, Huge viewfinder compared to the tunnel like view of 1.6x crop cameras...on and on...

There's 2 valid levels of comparison, though. One is of the tools temselves, and the 1D wins hands-down on this comparison; it is a truly professional camera and looks and feels like it, solid as a rock, reliable and weather-sealed and so forth. Plus, of course, additional features such as higher burst speed, larger viewfinder, etc etc.

Another level of comparison is the resultant image; in single-shot mode the 20D images compare astonishingly well with the 1D, considering the price difference. One of the practical results of this is that truly long glass is cheaper on the 20D, because of the 1.6 factor. This represents not inconsiderable savings.

And, of course, the 20D is a very decently-built camera by normal, mortal standards, and feels as much more solid than the rebel as the 1D does than the 20D. If you can AFFORD a 1D, and can justify the expenditure for your photography and the income/satisfaction it brings you, then by all means go for it. But the 20D is a HUGE step up in quality from entry-level cameras, and more than sufficient in terms of image quality for 99% of the work anyone will ever do, IMO.

Robt.
