...the continuing chronicles of my freelancing...

one evening a couple weeks ago, i went by the Richmond Times-Dispatch photo desk to sit down with the photo quality director for an indepth critique of the work i had done so far. this man is absolutely amazing in how he can read an image in terms of quality and context. i guess the rough voting and commenting here at dpc made sitting down with him a lot easier...

anyways, during the course of our 2-hour meeting, a page layout person came in, wondering if all the photographers were in fact gone. dan smiled and said, "no, here's one right here...what do you need?" he was laying out a story related to sandra day o'connor's retirement, and he wanted to use an image of the US Constitution--but he couldn't find anything in the archives.

he had in hand one of those replicas that you can buy in places like colonial williamsburg. we took it down to the paper's photo studio, put it up on a white board, and i took a few images. we went back to the photo desk, dropped the image into photoshop, adjusted the levels and sizes, captioned it, and dropped it into their image database.

the next day, there it was...

for me, this was a case of pure luck, as in opportunity meeting preparation. thank God i had brought my camera with me...

That is very cool. Nice to be in the right place at the right time.

Landscape photography is mainly being at the right place at the right time, but you just happened to do the same.
