Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop. -Ansel Adams

That means I've only got 12 more significant photos to take this year and I'll be up there with the masters. HaHaHa. I've only been messing around in photography for 15 years (obviously not too seriously) and haven't had a significant photo yet . . . but heck, I'm not going to let that stop me.

Thanks DPC for the inspiration to become a better photographer. It's a pleasure to be associated with such talented people.

What if I get MAYBE ONE good pic...my whole lifetime....? Can that be a good crop? :-p

Slightly off subject, it was an interesting point in the PBS documentary on his life, that until the late 60s he was struggling financially. He would have liked to go on more trips than he did but couldn't because of funds. Think about those missed potential classics.

The first thing that came to my mind when I read this is 'how do you define significant?'.

I think there could be multiple levels of significance. You could be on a level of the photography community at large significance, general public (sales/financial) significance, or personal goals/growth.

If you could differentiate a Photograph and a Photo or even a 'pic', I think it would be easier to understand what he's talking about.

I suspect that a "significant Adams" is a lot different than a "significant strangeghost."

Don't count yourself short. Most photographers, if asked, will say their best photograph is still in the future. With that in mind, Strangehost, you are at present a better photographer than Ansel Adams is. He can create nothing. His best are all behind; with no prospects for tomorrow.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Ron, and the perspective. But somehow I still think, even stone cold dead, that Adams kicks my ass.

Re: Ansel's quote, I recall with some vague amusement going on shooting trips in the American west, 3 weeks on the road, and coming back with maybe 100 sheets of film of 30-odd shots to process, considering half a dozen of the shots keepers, and feeling very satisfied that I had done good...

This large format photography is a whole 'nother world. I once camped for 3 DAYS on the shore of a certain lake in the desolation wilderness, into which I had packed my LF gear, to get the "perfect" combination of sky & light for the shot. It's kind of obsessive, really.
