the lower mirror on my 300D looks like it has a smear across it. Anyway I can clean this myself without throwing the mirror alignment off? If it is too risky, then I can send it in to Canon, but that means I won't have anything but an old G1 to shoot with for a few weeks. [shuttering at the thought of that]
would a smeared or dirty mirror be what is causing a lack of sharpness?

No. The mirror only affects the image in the viewfinder, not the final image on the sensor. I have cleaned the mirror in my D70 myself, never considered alignment. I didn't notice anything different after cleaning it, but now you're making me wonder... |

I may be wrong, but I'm assuming your in-camera sharpening is set to low or none. I would think that is the reason you're seeing a lack of sharpness. That can be corrected in PP anyway though, and is easier to fix than an oversharpened image. I would be interested to know what you have your in-camera sharpening set to.
It could also be due to the lens that you're using, some are softer than others. |

I have the sharpness set all the way up (+2)
I admit I do not have the best lenses - but they are not bad either, or so I thought. Here is what I have:
Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8-4.0 Aspherical
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro Super II

Maybe a back focus problem? Perhaps? Cleaning the mirror has nothing to with your image!

The mirror doesn't affect the final image, but it could affect focusing.
I would try selecting a focus point with on the clearest area of the viewfinder image and trying a test shot.
