Seeing as RAW images contain NO colour information, just a measure of light represented as voltage, could you convert into a solely B&W image and effectively get many times the image quality?

Normally, if you want a B&W image, you have to convert to colour, then desaturate. If you could have a B&W image right from the word GO in your RAW conversion software, then you would have a clearer image, right?

I've been practicing with b&w shots in raw...and also b&w raw shots with the infrared filter...they look alot better, lower noise to me.

sorry incorrect -
the sensor has color filters built in - can't avoid them

RAW images DO contain color information, because each voltage is from a pixel sensitive to only red, green, or blue. 1 red, 1 blue, and 2 greens are combined to form each pixel in the final image. Theoretically you could have more levels if you only did B&W - you could have 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 of those pixels on, so if you didn't care what color they were, you could have a couple extra bits of brightness information. Don't know what software can bring it out, though.
