Since you're going to be in Richmond I suggest walking or biking the dike. Also, visit Steveston, the fishing village which is now incorporated into the city of Richmond.
Also, if you have a car I suggest the Botanical Garden at UBC, Crescent Beach (South Surrey) and White Rock (Beach and pier, walkway all along the waterfront with mountain and sea views abound)

You'll want to refer to this earlier thread on Vancouver -- lots of good suggestions, bridge picture, etc.
Have a great time, it's a wonderful city. |

thanks everyone. I was in Vancouver last year this time, but I didn't get the chance to explore, save for going on the bus from Westminster in Richmond to Gastown. LOL.

If you are only going to be here for a day or 2, you will not get to see much. I recommennd the moring at stanley park bike around the sea wall should take about 1-2 hrs and then drive up to squamish or whistler to take in the sea to sky hwy, porteau cove area. Plan drive home around sunset, it is spectacular.Great waterfalls along the way, shannon and brandywine. Personally I would skip gastown, it is 3 blocks of cobblestone streets and tourist shops, its claim to fame is it steamclock which IMO is dul at best. It also borders the poorest postal code in all of canada. Unless you want to shop for cheap trinkets or super over-priced 'native' art. I would leae out this destination--if you were here for a long time maybe see it.
I agree lynn valley is a great hike spot and better than capilano, not quite as high but less touisty and as mentioned free.
Enjoy your stay!! |

Well, I'll actually be there for 11 days, but I'll only have the two days to explore. :(
Gastown may be a tourist trap, but I am a tourist. LOL. I was actually there last year and I found it charming and quaint. I'll probably save it for another day when I can just take the bus from Richmond, instead of wasting my saturday and sunday which are for exploring.

I know it seems like a lot, but most places are at most, 30 minutes from eachother. I've plotted directions from point to point. Also, places like Granville Island, and False Creek are basically drive-bys to get out and take pictures of the harbor from various points, so I need only dedicate 1/2 hour there. Believe me, this IS the prioritized list. LOL.

I wouldn't call Granville Island a driveby however it depends on what you're looking for. It's a very lively market (except on Monday's when it's closed). There are lots of artist's studios and a micro brewery.
A couple of hours may be needed.

Vancouver is beautiful..you can't go wrong. There's always something to see. I was in Horseshoe Bay last summer checking out some seals, called my Dad in Newfoundland and he was doing the same thing. Nice and nostalgic.
P.S. if you're into crack, check out East Hastings.

Yeah, I know - I was there last year. The reason I'm dedicating so little time to Granville is because I'll be there on a tv filming/boat tour on Monday. We'll be in the water for 3 hours, and then at the market for 2 hours for lunch/shopping. :)

Take care in Gastown at night also. Nice tourist area by day, seedy by night.

Getting caught downtown Vancouver when it's getting dark isn't too much fun. Especially when you've screwed up the bus schedules and find out you're stranded. Every stereotype you can fathom comes alive down there. |

Thanks for the advice. I'll actually have a car, and Gastown I'm saving for Tuesday at 1:00pm. :)
Then the following Monday, my last day in the area, I'll be at the Sun Yat-Set Chinese Gardens. Can't wait to get back there.
The only trick will be packing my manfrotto tripod, which I just remembered I have to do. Guess the suitcase is getting re-packed.
