Yep, as Ken posted, the ALT+#### combination is the fastest, if you know the code for the character you wish to insert. Codes range from 0000 to 0255, and not all special characters are represented. To see what character each code represents, do the following:
- Open Excel
- In cell A1 of a new workbook, paste this formula: =char(row())
- Copy/paste that formula down column A all the way to cell A255.
The characters displayed are those that will appear when you hold down the alt key and press the four-digit code corresponding to the row number. If the row number has less than four digits, use zero(s) to pad it out, e.g., character 65 should be typed ALT+0065.
If you don't pad out wit zeros, you may not get what you expect. As I recall it's another character map, but I don't know a trick for displaying this one.
Edit:
Disclaimer... use special characters at your own risk. Some of them, particularly the numbers below 0020, can cause problems since they have special functions. If you don't understand those functions, best not to go there.
