no, if you look at the bottom of the 550, there is a switch and switch it over to master
make sure the 500 is on the same channel and group as the 420
and then try using the E-TTL mode and it should work

the transmitter is for if you dont want the flash on your camera, or if you only have 2 flashes it keeps you from having to buy another flash to transmit and shoot wireless

it may have more features but i dont know, i dont have one
edit:
by the way, i wouldnt reccomend buiny a 420, i have it and i shot wirless with it a few times and you cant control how hard the 420 flash fires when you are wireless
get another 550 or a 580, that way you can adjust the brightness of the flash if you need to

I have a 580 and some 420s. The 580 gives you three groups, A, B, and C. The way that I understand it is that you can control the ratio of A to B and can control C relative to A and B. You don't need the transmitter if you have the 580 (I think the 550 is basically the same).
The 420 is cheaper than the transmitter, or was the last time I looked (and the tranmitter only has an A and B group, it doesn't have C). |

I hope you do know that you can get an Alien bee for about $230 (I forget exactly) with the student discount if you're a student (or if you know a student ;-) ). It can be set off via an optical slave which just fires after it detects another flash has gone off. I believe it only works with syncs slower than 1/100 consistantly however.
