I'm not sure why so many people were offended by this.
I viewed it as a tribute to my Grandfather.
It's too bad... I thought I would've faired better.
I felt that this was technically better than most of my stuff.
In fact, I am still proud of it no matter how it scored.
Thanks for the noce comments from some of you.

I think it scored low because it makes people remember loved ones that have passed away. No one wants to be reminded about that |

Didn't vote or comment due to time constraints. You have touched a very emotional nerve with this shot which in this community called DPC will not score you a very high score. Looking through your comments proves my point. On a photographic, technical level, I probably would have scored this a 5 at best because of the flatness of the shot. I'm assuming that you were in a very clinical setting which is not a great place for photography. It has no depth. On a personal level, I feel for your loss. Your grandfather is in a better place now and at peace.
I'm sorry for your loss,

I voted on every photo in the challenge except this one. I passed it up everytime it popped up because I just wasn't sure what to think of it. Personally, I didn't like any "death" shots (and there were a few) for a challenge titled "Family" - rather sad, I think.
About your grandfather - I wasn't even sure if the shot was staged and if it was, it was a little morbid, if not, it was even more morbid. A tribute would have been a shot of how he lived his life or some of his personal items and photos.
You do have my condolences for your family's loss.

I think its a great photo.
I do think its odd that one wouldn't view it as a tribute. There are as many ways to offer a tribute as there are stars in the sky, no one is more right than another.
While death may not be the happiest of family moments, I think it is one of the few that touches every single family in one way or another and it seems a legitimate subject, especially for a family challenge.
I actually prefer this photo to the ones of gravesites indicating family members that had passed. This one was infinitely more personal and in your face, gave you something to really focus on, connect with, and gave a real face to the idea of a loved one (family connection here) passing on.
Family isn't always happy, grand and wonderful. Often its painful, irritating and sad. I think this illustrates one of those less than great times quite well.
Of course this is all my opinion, so take it as you will.
Nice capture, koltrane75.

Boy.. you think *you* have a controversial family shot..
just kidding.
I missed this one in voting.. I was only able to get to 40% due to time constraints. Don't really know how I would have voted it.. didn't really strike a chord with me.. I'm one of those that isn't really affected by death

This comment from a similar thread would seem to apply here too. Shots which are evocative but not "pretty pictures" will usually not get a high average score, but will get a few comments from people who were really moved by the image -- I usually consider that a "successful" image. |

Those 2 sentences are somewhat contradictory - why would you think it odd that some don't view it as a tribute when you then say there are a zillion ways to offer a tribute?
In any case, I see your point and I don't begrudge him for considering it a tribute - that's his right - but I don't - and that's my right. Like you said, no one is more right than the other. :)
I'll also agree with the General that if your intent was to evoke emotion, it was a success.

Death is a part of EVERY life! Why can't it be expressed as much as life! I don't see anything wrong with this photo at all! |

Nobody said there was anything "wrong" with the photo. As with everything about these challenges, reactions are inherently subjective. You feel free to enter a shot of a dead person in any challenge you like, and I'll feel free to vote on it (or not) any way I like. Fair enough?

I wasn´t sure how to read the title of the image. Was it making fun of a snoring man, by saying he was breathing his last breaths (I see that a lot at my house, almost choking sounds) and if this is indeed of a person that has passed away, it´s not his last breath! My condolences to your family..

I wasn't sure if this shot was staged or not but got over that by just looking on it as a photo and voting on that. Yes it was a sad pcture and I probably could not have taken it if it wasn't staged but that's MY "problem" and not the photographer's so I judged it that way. I thought it was a good shot.

There isn't anything at all about your entry that says "tribute" to me. It wasn't even clear whether it was staged or real. What kind of score were you expecting?

To clarify, this shot was not staged.
I do appreciate the candor of KPriest,
"In any case, I see your point and I don't begrudge him for considering it a tribute - that's his right - but I don't - and that's my right. Like you said, no one is more right than the other. :)"
To answer what score was I expecting...
Given my pessimistic nature and experience at DPC thus far, I guess I should have expected to score low. However, as this was such a personal shot, (and I thought it is technically better than some of my stuff) I kind of hoped to score higher than my usual.
Also, I do appreciate that many don't feel that this is a tribute.
However, his wife (my grandmother) feels it is her favorite shot of a group that I took over the course of weeks ending in his death. The only reason I posted to this challenge was because of her reaction.
Anyway, I appreciate all the feedback,
Jimmy |
