Very very nice. Looks like a long one, exposure wise. had i remembered my remote I might have tried bulb. I was a bit disappointed at the colors of my shots - or the lack thereof.

Thank you for that nice comment!
I just got a tripod, so of course I had to play with it--I've never used the bulb setting before, but now with my tripod I can, so that's pretty neat.
Yours do not look bad at all, either!

Question, has anyone tried shooting a long shutter and covering the lens after each burst to give a multiple-image look? Any examples? I thought about it July 5th...a little too late. A lot of shots that I took with more than one burst in them (long shutter speeds) were vastly overexposed.

The over exposure was an issue with my grand finale shots. I like your idea...now to find some more fireworks!

Hey, gorgeous stuff James! Looks like they put on an awesome display! Seems like it was choreographed very well. You really did it justice. Kudos.

Thanks Fritz, stdavidson and totaldis

i was not too happy with the spot I picked to take the pics from. there are some light poles I just could not get away from and some I cant clone out (lack of high enough skill, I can clone, trust me, just not good enough)

also I threw in some well over expose shots of the fianle, just to show what can happen when not exposed properly. This was the best show I have seen in Houston in a long time, it totally rawked

Well, a little late, but here's one from me.

Here's my belated shots:

I used ISO, 100 f2.8 with various exposure lengths from 2-8 seconds. It was 100% trial and error. It took me about 8 shots before I realized that "hey, maybe auto focus isn't such a good idea in this situation..." lol It wasn't--though I am surprised to find the f717's auto-focus was almost able to handle the task--but not quite.

After our National Day here in France, I was able to take some picture of the fireworks on the Eiffle Tower. This is my first try on fireworks, tell me what you think.
Those have been taken mostly at 70mm, f/16 with my Nikon Nikkor Kit lens mounted on my D70.

Fireworks on the Eiffel tower

You'll need to have the Macromedia flash plugin for your browser though.

I thought the fireworks on the tower were cool but several of the shots seemed to suffer from one or the other or both: a slight lack of sharpness and crooked horizons. Also, it would have been cool, perhaps, to have either a downward or upward angle on the shots--something that might have proved to be a little more dramatic. I very am much a hypocrite to tell you this (because my shots also suffered from the same issues.) Please so not take this comment in a way that will lead you to think I did not enjoy the shots. Being a pyro, I enjoyed them thoroughly. I just think that, because the Eiffle was included in the shot, thus acting as an orientation reference, one could have exploited that to produce a really spectacular shot--mine for example, are just plain ol' fire works and there's really nothing else that could be done to enhance them except perhaps (had I a lens capable of it) play with the zoom a little. Again, though, I thought they were neat shots with some unrealized potential. Next year maybe? I look forward to seeing them!

I noticed several of you D70 owners have not put in what settings you used to get your fireworks to turn out nicely. Can you please do so, as mine did not turn out too good on July 4th. I need to improve on that, thanks!

These are not your typical fireworks shot. I tried to include a family member as well, but not asa well as I had hoped. I do have the setting for each shot on the individual photograph page for heather. Hope it helps.

Thanks Scott, did you have it on Manual, Aperture or Shutter? That is what I am trying to figure out, how to make it stay open for 4 seconds which seems to be the favourite time for firework displays?

Yeah I agree with that, but let me explain the set up.
These photos were taken from my window in Paris. Actually, if you look directly through the window, you won't have that view, you have to bend right to see the Eiffel Tower. The problem is that I was not alone, there were 4 of my friends who also wanted to enjoy the show. So we had to find a setup to be able to fit 4 person plus the tripod, which led to something awfully uncomfortable, with one guys under the tripod :). I guess he might have hit slightly the tripod during a shot, which might have introduced this lack of sharpness.
Also, these are cropped version of the shots, I only had a 70mm with me at the time so I couldn't zoom enough. Here is a thumbnail of an original.

To answer the question about the settings, I obviously used a tripod. The D70 was set on manual mode, f/16 and bulb mode, using the IR remote controler. I had a few tries to get a correct exposure length, between 3 and 4 sec was the best. That's it :)

Here are a few from Up-Town Charlotte NC.

So that's what I need, one of those IR remote controllers then? Thanks Neurowork.

Unless I'm mis-reading your entry's info, 8 is a small aperture ... pretty cool photo any way it was done.

I said 'big' because it's the largest aperture value available on my trusty p&s.

Finally got to see some fireworks this summer! I'm still in the process of editing the shots, but here's a teaser for you all.
