Unfortunately I rushed my pic to get it in on time and didn't realize until the next day that I submitted the wrong one!!! I had one that was much sharper and clearer after some final editing, but I am an idiot... and my score reflects that fact too!

For fun, and partially due to laziness, I had a great photo (technically one of the better shots I've shot), but only a tangential (at best) relationship to the family challenge. I could have reshot it for "independence" but decided to go ahead and enter it in family and see what happens to my vote-bell-curve. Here's my progress so far:

Early voting had it at about 4.7 (first morning), and it peaked at nearly 5.4 yesterday afternoon, and has now settled down somewhat. My comments are filled with DNMTC with a few sprinkled "thanks for thinking outside the box" type comments. I'm betting my vote distribution will be double-peaked high and low.

I find the general comprehension of concepts very limited. For example the challenge is Family and what grounds this covers and yet how strictly singular it is being interpreted.

You have family of colors, of species, of circumstances and it goes on, yet many are stuck on the human family as the only family. Lol, DPC never ceases to surprise me.

I wonder what mish-mash of definitions will affect the independence.

After scoring 540 Circles, 371 Bugs & Flowers in Macro, 443 pictures or rusted stuff, and 501 pics of cold hard metal, is it too much to expect to finally see some pictures in the family challenge that have some feeling to them? About 50% seem to be outtakes and ideas left over from the macro and bird challenges. Many are defending the concept of family as any collection of like objects but is it too much to expect a members challenge to try to capture some of the emotion that the word "family" stirs in many of us? And I don't think that a whole family needs to be shown to convey family; in fact, my top score went to a guy on a crapper; but I sure have trouble connecting with a bag of potatos. Forgive me if your technically brilliant, impeccably composed and focused, and exquisitiely lighted macro of three different members of the flatworm family did not receive a 10 from me. If I did not feel the family in these photos, they did not receive my top scores.

FYI, there are no stinker photos in this competition and didn't score anything below a 4. I just hoped for more "feeling" from this competition.

Flotsam- I'm with ya on the high vote for the guy in the john. I'm still laughing at that one. Originality goes a long way in my book.

I'm impressed that I now have more votes than there are entries in the challenge (167 votes vs 159 entries). And it's only Wednesday!

I hope you don't seriously think that getting a 4.8 means there's something wrong with you! You should take a look at the porfolios of the ribbon winners in here. You'll find they get them too. Even the greats don't always take great shots.

4.8 just means you have learning to look forward to. I just got 2 score in a row in the 4's and I'm sure I'll produce more. Keep learning, keep trying! Most of us are in the same boat as you!

Just watched my score jump up and up to the second-highest I've ever gotten. Not much of a score, but really exciting considering I half-expected to get booed off the stage for this one.

I love you Wednesday voters!

Seems you are in some very good company for first challenge results, see First scores

It is not quite text book stuff you need to get good scores, we have pros scoring lower than 5.

Thanks, you guys make me feel a bit better.

You are right about the company we keep. I gave //www.fotofight.com a try and really like it here much better. One advantage of that site is the smaller, quicker contests. I am going to try them a few more times but DPC is still my FAV!

Night all!

most of the images do nothing for me, bar a couple of exceptions.

i think what we realy loose sight of sometimes is what you are up against....in every challenge there are some great shots and against them the rest are just pics........

I think it's interesting how many comments people are reporting. Myself, I have 20. I wonder... with the smaller number of entries, are the voters feeling more relaxed and able to comment?
07/15/2005 04:39:05 PM · #123
I thinkthat it is the case, I have 17 which is higher than my average.
