Does anyone have any experience with any of the lenses out there that are 18-200mm, 28-300mm, etc? Do they have the quality to justify replacing multiple lenses that have focal ranges somewhere in between those extremes? The Tamron 18-200 seems to be a decent lens, but I certainly don't want to commit to that against the advice of the highly knowlegable and skilled members of DPC!!

First - you know the old saying, you get what you pay for.
Now, IMHO only for the price the two lenses you mention (I have the Tamron 28-300 di) make for a pretty decent walk around lens. They are light and do pretty well using middle apertures. They fall down at the extremes in aperture and in focal length.

They will never replace good glass. If you are looking for a large range in better glass I think Canon makes a lens in this range for a few thousand dollars.

The 28-300 lenses are for film cameras (in theory)
the 18-200 are for the digital APS sized sensor cameras (rebel, D70, etc).

For convenience they are fine. if image quality is important then you should look elsewhere. THey are both 10:1 zooms - a lot of area to cover at a low price (relatively speaking) so something gotta give - image quality is that thing.

Decide what you want to shoot and pic a very good lens for that. For other shooting get a mid grade lens.

Tamron's 28-75 2.8 XR Di for about $300 or Sigma's 18-50 2.8 EX DC for $420-520 (ebay, b&h) are both very good.

Sigma's 70-300 4-5.6 APO Super Macro 2 (about $200) is a good mid-=grade long lens.

Canon's 70-200 4L is the better long lens choice, but at $580 you'll spend more. Sigma and Tamron have some long lenses that are very good too, but cost more.

Lots of people like the Canon IS lenses for general use. I find them very heavy but they have their place.
