Ballroom dancing takes a lot of training and practice... I have friends who do it. Also pool takes skill, and there's certainly a physical part to it, I mean, if you can't control your body, you can't hit the balls in. You don't actually believe that motor racing doesn't take physical activity do you? Fatigue is huge in races, lots of stress, long periods of time where you have to concentrate very carefully... It might not be the same as sports that involve running for example, but you can't say it's not physcial, that's just not true.

As per the encyclopedia britannica (Could not find an americana) the following.
Sport: Recreational or competitive activities that involve a degree of physical strength or skill. At one time, sports were commonly considered to include only the outdoor recreational pastimes, such as fishing, shooting, and hunting, as opposed to games, which were regarded as organized athletic contests played by teams or individuals according to prescribed rules.
So perhaps the literal RECREATIONAL OR COMPETITIVE and also PHYSICAL STRENGH OR SKILL are rather broad in definition. In my opinion one could include ANYTHING as SPORT.
Now ACTION thats different to some even opening a bottle is action, to others IF you open that bottle there will be action. There could be sports if the recreational beer causes the wife to skillfully use physical strengh to compete with the beer money for tickets to the ball.
Lets have a ball and enjoy the sports, sober up and vote skillfully. |

I think all of them are sports, if you go to a store and look for darts or fishing stuff, they are in the sporting goods section. right?
I know here they are definatly a sport just as texas hold'em is.

Ever since they started showing it on ESPN?
Seriously...Don't be such a narrow-minded person. For some, if it doesn't involve a ball, they don't consider it a sport.

you guys always intepret the challenge with anything and everything, trying to keep "open mind" and keep relating things to the challenge so eventually the weekly challenge can mean anything and everything so can we suggest that DPChallenge no longer put a weekly theme so we can all avoid this sort of fight or discussion in the forums because it is never fruitful and is a waste of time. |

Billiards, darts, shuffleboard, these all reward precise muscular control rather than brute strength, but that doesn't mean it's not a "physical" activity. |

Why posting photo that has no value, nor photographic, nor artistic?
and ome more thing: what is sport? everything that need muscle or patience is not a sport. I mean fishing and poker. Fishing is leisure an Poker is a card game. Chess is a sport as much as it has its own championships |
I thought there were a lot of really good sports shots in this challenge. Shots that portrayed the tension of a competition, either against ones self or against others scored best from me.

I think wading chest deep in a river with strong current (lets say the Yellowstone River), casting a 1/8oz fly 40 yards to a fishy looking spot, catching a fish that just hit the fly, and not falling in the river as a skill and sport. And if ya do fall in, being able to swim with 50lbs of flyfishing flies, leader, extra spools, split shot, raingear, lunch, etc. in your fishing vest, and chest waders that just filled up with water is a sporting challenge. Well beyond your idea of fishing as sitting on a bank drinking beer watching a bobber going under, pulling the fish in, and rebaiting the hook with a worm and popping another beer. I think the term sportsmen came from hunting and fishing to my knowledge.
Now for darts, I agree that it is a sport at 20 feet. Ya really got to have a baseball pitchers arm to get um in. :)
Just my thoughts. |

Bench-clearing, yes, over a season of twice as many games, but hockey is the only major sport in which punching out another player brings a two- or five-minute "penalty (for your team), and not immediate expuslion/suspension. And how 'bout that guy who sucker-punched an opponent and broke his neck, probably ending his career? Just good old "physical play" I suppose ... |

But that's not the question at hand; I think there's little disagreement about what type of photo would score better. |

Just to keep you informed... that player you refer to was and is still suspended, which is a lot more than we can say for some pitcher we all know who attacked a photographer.
I am not a supporter of violence in hockey, but by the same token I do recognize that violence is not something that is exclusive to hockey, as witnessed by several examples in baseball and basketball.
I do not know if you follow hockey at all General, but I can assure you that it is much more than "frozen fisticuffs"

So what do you consider to be a "real sport" ? You can see my favs in my portfolio - football, basketball, horse racing, surfing, and of course, the best sport of all, baseball. No pictures but I have played darts on teams in leagues, and as an individual in tourneys. Darts is a sport by any reasonable definition. |
DARTS!!! YES!!! A sport for sure. As a matter af fact, while baseball and softball have been dropped from the Olympics as of the London games (a sad state of affairs, to be sure), darts will be added.
Case closed.

Ray: I used to follow hockey some (remember I'm a native Californian) -- I even saw a SF Seals game when they were in the Western Hockey league.
Other sports also have their deplorable incidents, but in none of them is actual physical battery of an opponent so casually tolerated, and even integrated into the ethos of the the game.
The Russian Olympic team of the 1950-70 era played beautiful, flowing hockey, which more resembled basketball or soccer on skates. The last time I checked, the NHL was starting to resemble Rollerball.
I'll still watch out local team, especially if they get to the payoffs, but I see no reason to excuse or tolerate the unnecessary violence. It's not that hard ... if the penalty for swinging your stick or dropping your gloves was an automatic ejection and suspension, with the suspension doubling for each successive incident, you can bet the bahavior would change--the coaches would demand it. Unfortunately, the fans blood-lust would be left wanting, and half-empty arenas don't pay 8 million-dollar salaries.
I expect Mr. Rogers (the cantankerous pitcher, not the deceased children's show host) will eventually serve his 20-game suspension or whatever; the civil and criminal actions are more likely to create an inconvenience, since his All-Star Game appearance bonus seems to have covered his fine already.

I am not too sure on this one. I scored many a pic poorly because of the content. Poker, chess, (although great games) are not sports. Neither is a picture of an animal a sport (regardless of the title)unless it involves betting (like horse racing, dog racing, etc...) ummmm... and ACTION!!!! What is up with photos of a baseball bat and glove and ball? Where is the action? Arrgh. If I don't have an appropriate photo I don't enter.

No it is not a sport because it is on ESPN - it might be sporting to play poker but a sport involves a physical challenge. A sport requires a winner and a loser so soccer is out as well as fishing. I hope everyone is enjoying this thread.
