If anyone's interested, here's a Lexar Firewire CF Reader for $11 with free shipping. This is THE fastest way to get images into your computer, period. |

I'm up to (firewire) reader #3 and I've had so many problems..none of them worked "well" to the point where the 2 pro-shops in montreal (LL Lauzeau and Photoservice) have taken them off the shelf...so I was not the only one with issues.

you don't have USB2.0? my reader transfer a full 1G in about 2mins. |

USB 2 is good @ burst
but Firewire is sustained @ about 40MB/sec
USB 2 is about 34MB/sec
not alot for small files, but larger files you'll definately notice the difference :) |

No argument from me about how much faster FiWi is but all 3 readers I bought worked very poorly, either winXPp would not recognise it ebery so often... either it would be recognised but the CF card would not apear... or the files would stop mid transfer and I would get not indication of this. |

Hmm - I just placed an order (I've been considering getting one for awhile, since I have no memory card reader as of now). I hope I don't have any of the problems that you mentioned, Gil! Were any of these name brand readers?

If you had this problem with multiple readers, it almost certainly wasn't the readers. Also, there is no inherent problem with WinXP and 1394 devices. I use several FireWire devices with both my IBM T42 laptop (with a 1394-to-cardbus adapter) and with my desktop, which, by a strange set of circumstances has (count 'em!) three separate FireWire adapters; One on the MOBO, one really old "pyro" PCI add-in card (still the best one I own) and one as a "bonus" on another adapter. I'd suggest that the problems were either hardware related or related to an old or improper driver.
My experience has been that the FireWire readers are much faster *in actual use* than USB2.0 (about 4x faster in my personal test) for sustained transfers.

Considering that BOTH pro-shops took them off the racks....I would think that I am not the only one with this issue. |

I have this exact model, purchased about 6 weeks ago, and us it exclusively, with complete success. It was recognized automatically by WinXP Pro (SP2 plus recent updates).

I also have Win XP Pro with SP2 and updates ,it is recognized automatically as well but it won't open the images all of the time ,sometimes it works just fine and other times it says device is no longer accessabile ,I unplug and plug it back in and it works(sometimes). I moved files ONCE and lost half of them, but it will copy with no loss of images. The thing just sucks! But it is very fast when it works .

I wonder if there is some incompatibility between the reader and some firewire adapters? the symptoms sure sound like there is a hardware problem that results in it *almost* but not quite working.
I had a similar issue a few years ago with USB 1.1 hubs; tried two copies of one and one of another before realizing that ANYTIME I interposed a hub between the 'pooter and certain devices (not others) all the devices would fail. Never used a hub again, LOL.

yeah USB2.0 is faster by 80MB/s... I just got a firewire card, but I don't have USB2.0. You can get a Firewire card for under $15 shipped.

Hmm, shoots that theory... I saw a couple reports of Lexar cards that were problematic with that reader. That's the same reader, though, that Rob galbraith uses to do all his CF card speed tests, and he's had none of those issues that I know of. You KNOW he's tested it with a crapload of different cards.
I'm pretty much convinced it's some issue between the reader and the FireWire adapter.

I called the Lexar 800 number and the person on the other end said they have a few complaints about the readers .I wonder if she still has her job ?She had me go to the device manager and remove the driver and then unplug the unit and re install it by pluging the unit back in,it worked once then it started to get moody again .LOL
I was going to try a Lexar cf card ,but then I saw that post about the problems with it so I never bothered . I still use the usb 2.0 reader for transfers,I dont trust the firewire reader . |

I'd do the same thing, ya gotta go with what works for you. If you really are curious, you might try installing the reader on someone else's 'pooter and see if it works there.
