For a fantastic photo story (both photo and story are excellent), check out A Surprise in the Ring in the LA Times.

You may have to register to read it but it's worth it. Don't miss the flash photo story on the right side of the page.

This is the type of story-telling that I think photographers should aspire to. Enjoy!

That was a great article Mike. I read the entire thing and I watched the video. The video was a perfect example of the passion that goes into great photography. I would guess that this passion exists in almost every great photographer. I know it is possible to take an awesome photograph by chance. But a great photographer has this ability to put feeling into a photograph over and over again. I am amazed at the amount of time this photographer spent learning the people he was shooting. His passion shows in this article and in the photographs that paint the personalities of his subjects here.

Putting that feeling into a photograph is something I aspire to in my more serious work.

Thanks for sharing.

I completely agree, with one correction. The writer for the story was Kurt Streeter and the photographer was Anne Cusack. I loved both the writing and the photography.

You may recognize another spectacular photo from Anne's repertoire...I encourage everyone to research and discover as much about a person's work as you can when you've been impressed by it. This is how we improve...

it is terrific work... thanks for passing that along.

My question is, how do these people get paid? How is their workload created, managed? Do they get a say in the post processing or is there a department for that?

My guess is they are on salary from the LA Times, and juggling many stories at a time. Is the workflow organized by the creators? Does Anne wake up and just decide to go back over to the gym to get more photos? I'm sure this isn't the case, but does anyone know how this works from an organizational standpoing?
