I searched the archives since the search tool doesn't work and I didn't see anything about it. I tried a few techniques using curves and highlights, but it didn't work. It's a pretty large area - the sun hitting a smooth white rock making it this giant white thing. Any suggestions, or do I just scrap it? Problem is, I can't reshoot and it's too near the subject. I also tried cloning, but that just made the shot look fake.

thanks for any help!!!

Why don't you post it so people can offer suggestions ?

I was hoping to "fix" a photo for the zoo challenge and I didn't want to post it cause then I wouldn't be able to enter it. I have another shot of something else, but I just keep coming back to this one for (if you saw it) obvious reasons. (sigh)

For a quick fix, try this:

Select the rock (should be easy if it's that bright) and save the selection. Make a new layer, load the selection and use PS filters to add texture. Fade this layer to, say, 50% (or whatever looks reasonably good). Sometimes a little gaussian blur helps here also.

Now go back to the original layer, load the selection, and make an adjustment layer for selective color. In that layer, click the dropdown and select "white". Play with the "black" slider to add density and the color sliders to add color. Be subtle, just give it a hint.

This should produce acceptable results at the 640 pixel size, assuming you're doing the work at full size, before resizing the image. I't problematical for printing, though.

Remember, BE SUBTLE.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Robert. I played with it, but with it being so white - and with it having water running over it, it's really hard to "fix." I think I'll just forget it and work on another selection. Either that, or get slammed for "the white rock." LOL

Don't give up yet. Here's what ya do: FIRST get out the hair dryer and point it at the selection; the water will evaporate. The proceed as above, and let the water flow again. Very natural looking. Problem solved :-)
