I'm not sure where to ask this question, so it's here...

The challenge dates are very strict, but living half-way around the world, how are time zones interpreted? If I take it within the challenge dates here, it means I can't enter on the last day of the challenge, right? Because the US is behind Australia, and my EXIF date will show the next day, even though the challenge is still open in the US? Or is some leeway taken into account? It looks like the date is taken very strictly, so I'd like to find out how the strictness treats international entrants... :)

Oh, and someone said they took a photo a day too early...how do you find out the challenge topic a day in advance? Live in Hawaii and you might get a few hours...

The dates/times are very strict. Your photo needs to be taken within the time frame for DPC server time. Just make sure your photo is set to your time zone and mention in the details the location of your photo. We do 'conversion' to make sure it falls withint 'DPC time'. When you go to submit your photo, it will ask for the date and if your time zone makes it a different day, just enter the closest date and make sure you mention it in your comments that it's off due to time zone.
Hope this helps.
Edit to add that you cannot find out the challenge in advance (not even site council knows). If someone says they took it 'too early' they probably mean that they happened to have taken a photo yesterday that fits the challenge, but they can't enter it due to it being illegal for the dates.

The challenge dates are based on Eastern Daylight Time (New York). The time is posted on the bottom of each page if you need help.

You can submit for as long the site will accept your submission. If you're in Australia and your profile notes this, we'll take this into account if we view your EXIF and need to verify dates.

No one finds out about a topic in advance (even the SC don't know) but frequently there are people who have just taken a photo unknowingly that would fit into the challenge well.

Edit to add: Yeah, like Heather said. :)

Wow, thanks for the quick reply! I've just double checked the challenge rules description, and it does actually note the timezone issue, and describes how it's handled. I just didn't see it.

Thanks for the description of the "too early". That makes sense.

So, any photo taken after the announcement and before the closing is valid, and provided we're all honest and everything's checked properly, the timezone is not an issue. Cool. Thanks for your help.
