Those are awesome, Linda! I wanted to get closer pix of the Taquamenon Falls, but my batteries ran out! All the other pix of the falls I have are with my family frolicking half naked in the water. :)
I really love the first one. We'll have to check out those falls during our Vacation next year. :)

I believe all these photos to be out of focus.
The colors in the first one dont please me either.
Nice shutter speed, but you need to use a tripod when doing waterfalls.
Keep trying you are almost there!

I left you some comments.
Is the colour of the falls on the first one natural?

Jeremy, I was using a tripod - for some reason even with a tripod and using a remote trigger release I am not getting the sharpness i would expect. It is very frustrating. I did not add any USM to any of them as I wanted to see if others would pick up on what I thought was poor focus also.

Thanks for the comments. The first photo does have a different color tone to it - but that is due to my blunder...did not set my WB correctly. I was going to PS it , but first wanted to get opinions on it first. Personally I think the blues are too strong here.
The third photo is intentionally soft focus, and even PS'd some glow to it for more effect. The original did have some sharpness to it, although not much.

Can you put the camera setting details on the photographs posted?

These are all lovely photos, but the third one is quite soft...Almost like it's out of focus, or maybe some more USM would help?

Holy cow!!! Those are georgious. If I had the money I'd say put those up for sale and I'd buy them. Too bad for both of us I'm broke.
My favorite is the first one. I love the colors. |

Thanks Linda. Is the 3rd photograph a cropped version of the second one? I like the first one but the focus is just a little out. The second one isnt too bad either but the third one is just a bit too out of focus for my taste. I know your going for a soft focus effect but you might have to give it the usm treatment.

Well now that I see you are only using an aperture of 6.9, thats a problem right there. Bump the iso up to 400, and you should be usiung an aperture of around 16-22. though everything should be sharp, which im not really understanding why its not. Was it windy that day? was the tripod stable? where did you have the tripod?
I cant really figure anything else out as to why it would be blurry on a tripod.

Linda - for the Horseshoe Falls shot I would use F10 or so and then dial in a minus .7 or 1 EV to reduce the wash out on the falls. I think you would get an improved depth of field that should help with the focus and the EV compensation will reduce the burn.
That shot is pretty close though. Maybe you could warm it up a touch in PS also. Good luck.
edit: disclaimer - I'm certainly no expert. Just MHO : )

this is a post-processed PS edition to correct the blue color cast - what do you think? I like it better myself.

I like waterfalls... I'm a fan of longer exposures for the smooth flowing water look too. The last one is just a little soft focused for my taste.
It has been 110 degrees in my neck of the woods for weeks now but we had a wet and cool spring. That seems so long ago, but here are some waterfall pictures I took back then near Phoenix, AZ:

The reworking of the waterfall is nice, but I admit I just liked the blue cast by the original. |
