I didn't mean that Karma -- I would never make fun of your dog. (But wait until I tell you about something my mom did some years ago ... I'll send you a note.) |

I also got the 'generic' comment about my picture. I decided that it was entirly up to them how they voted but I would use the reverse and I have added an extra point to everyone who has mamage to get the word circle in the title, so that should just about even things up!! |

Of course pictures do not need a title and they should always be judged on their merit. But titles are very useful. They can help the un-seeing viewer to understand the image. They can help in identifying a picture when referring to many different pictures. They can remind the photographer what the picture was about years later. Anyone who has a hang up about including the challenge name in a title deserves our sympathy.
In the recent Metal challenge my entry was of lead organ pipes. They happened to be the bass notes and lead is a base metal. One commenter said he would prefer the challenge name not to be in the title. I wonder if he/she understood the connection? |

What? Join twice? Have you repressed May 5, 2005? LOL. Move on...at least the person explained his/her vote.
What bugs me is people who have received multiple - often 10 or more - comments on a pic, and find only one - or even none - of them "helpful".

I got the same comment but they said in my case the title worked so they were not taking points off.. but if you look at the blue ribbon in Macro challege it had the challenge name in the title sooooooooo it's just one persons vote..

For this contest everyone who has the word âcircleâ in their title is getting a max 10 score. This is a copy and paste version that I am including in every photo that I upgrade to 10 due to the title. We as members of DPchallenge need to be reminded of the topic of the challenge â we really need to reread the topic every time we reach a photo. If circle is in the title and it is appropriate I will give a 10. I am sorry if you do not agree with my method of voting â but scores are all I have.
Shadow, this was hilarious LOL |

And your "threat" means less since there's no way to vote paying members a lower score...
(...and I don't have a photo in the challenge.)
Edit: Forgot the :-P :.:.:...

The title comment is a very effective one. It gives specific feedback as to exactly what that voter liked or didn't like about your photo. Although I wouldn't vote that way I would much rather receive such a comment than one that just says "great photo!".
Some people always vote down nudes. Others always vote down cats. Or even children. That's their right. It all evens out in the end.

Look, when the hidden voter option first appeared I voice the opinion to give the recipients of the hidden commentators the option to turn them off or make them invisible. Why?
Because those hidden could taunt and tease and we have have no way to get to them. Give people a little power and someone always exploits it to the hilt. When you hide you can leave a question as a comment because you know the receiver has to wait to the end to identify you and then they have time to tone down their statement, question or general tone.
I was told not to worry and that such option was not at all required. So, when we get a stupid comment from a bag in the head voters, we are told to take it in stride. While this advise is okay, it does not address the fact that to give an option to a group that wants to hide is to create a situation wherein some of the bag over their heads voters will take advantage exactly because they can taunt and tease. My solution was to give me the option to render their comments invisible until the close of the challenge.
What I do now, is that I do not give any weight to "hidden during voting" I do not care if the comment is good or bad. I do believe these people need a course in presenting their ideas. We just do not say whatever comes into our heads. When we deal with others we temper our discourse in favor of diplomacy.

this is actually a very good suggestion. if they can HIDE, we can also choose to hide their comments until the voting is over. very diplomatic! i love it. |

Personal Best? Well, to be fair I have not seen your photo so I can't comment on it. But I would like to comment on your idea of personal best.
More than just a few challenges back I submitted a photo that finished dead last out of over 400. That photo (Animus doesn't live here anymore) was torpedoed in the voting because people felt it did not address the challenge topic (Abandoned buildings).
Even though this image tanked in the challenge I know it was one fricking fantastic photo. And if that is what you truly believe about your photo, then I encourage you to just note that one person's opinion and move on. Every bit of energy you spend stewing on them is energy you do not have to put towards your own pursuits.

I'll mention the title in my comment if I feel it detracts from the image though most of the time I don't read the title. |
Same here.. I never read the titles.. I look at the photos..
Man Im steaming over this one.
I would have preferred the person saying my photo was crap because the colors were off or out of focus etc..
I really had high hopes this was going to beat my personal best.. |

You exercise that option by NOT CLICKING on the comments button under your score, or turn off current scores altogether in your preferences.
If someone makes an "inappropriate" comment, please report it right away (via PM, not by posting in a forum) and/or copy and paste it elsewhere so that it can be referred-to if the commenter changes the comment before the challenge closes.
But please refrain from name-calling and derogatory terms; this was not a "stupid" comment. It used pefectly good logic to arrive at a conclusion many people here disagree with. |

I sometimes feel I am an alien. If I turn off comments then I see none. So how can anybody say the option to turn off the specific hidden commentator is there.
Also remember, that the site ironically gave them the bag over their heads options. Is one to look at this icon and interpret it different?
If a commentator is going to throw a stone it is best to be visible. Again, this feature encourages it because they love to ask questions that they know the reader is unable to answer.
Again, I do not take this personally as I can take of myself and I do not report anybody until I square off with them. We have enough policing as is. We all have a different idea of what is offensive so it does not pay to attribute a good virtue to any statement saying it is not offensive but rather unpopular, reread the statement because unpopular usually means it rubs some people the wrong way.
The rules are what they are but I would have never granted the hidden comment option because this is catering to one groups' sentiments and to tell members that they have the option to turn off the hidden voters is not quite an accurate statement.
I debate this not formyself but for the countless threads that the controversial hidden voters feauture has given rise to.
I have been here over one year and have made full and partial comments and only one negative kickback, yet I never reported the member. I am not here to make enemies and I feel that diplomacy is lacking when members opt to hide themselves. It is almost comical in a site that strives to help.
I am sorry, but the hidden voting feature are for people who have little patience and lack love and understanding for their fellowman. yes, they claim they do not want any feedback, but then how much feedback is really present? Not enough to sanctify this feauture.
Yes, there are many that are well mannered, but if so, why hide. I mean hide and seek is a rather childish game. |

On the contrary, i think since the anonymity only lasts as long as the contest, it gives people a good chance to calm down and look at comments from more than one point of view before starting slinging abusive messages at the commenter.
