Next time someone gives you a bad comment, think about the people in the world who have real problems.

Whomever made the comment has the absolute right to be as wrong as he/she wishes to be. That's the beauty of the free world. And you have the right to speak badly of them in public....as God intended but to discount a vote over an opinion is absurd.
You too have the right to be as wrong as you want to be, of course.
The whole site is rooted in opinions. Now before everybody stops commenting all together for fear of being called out in public....

I force myself NOT to look at the title of the submission b/c I want to be able to see the challenge in the photo WITHOUT the title. For example, like in the "Family" challenge....I want to 'feel' family when I see the pic...thats my 2 cents.

While I was thinking of posting a thread on the same issue as my picture is also a victim of this 'one person' you staretd it... thanks.
Although my title includes the theme name, it is an ingenious title. Actually someone gave a good comment for the same reason also..
Note: Check out my picture after the challenge is over.
Anyways in openion as pointed out by some in this thread, this site is about taking good pictures and learning to take better.. and not about being a genious in titling a picture. So for the same matter when we know that in the 'Circle' challenge the pictures are about circle why even bother naming them and worry about someone lowering your score.
I have seen crap titled pictures winning ribbons on this site, but then again people appreciated the picture because of it beauty, creativity and technical details.
I am not a great photographer but I can recognise one when I see a great picture. The photographer can have many reasons to title a picture like such e.g he could be from a non-english speaking part of the world but still his genious is in the picture and not the title 'alone'.
I personally have marked some pictures low in this challenge as IMO they were not meeting the theme. Still I don't think I have taken out a personal grude by voting someone low because of 'just one aspect' in the whole picture. also I have tried to let the person know the reason.
I guess the person who voted low for 'circle' titled pictures should go back and see those pictures and ask him/her how the PICTURE meets the challenge overall.

This is just stupid. It means now besides thinking about the composition of our shots we have to also consider we might lose points becuase someone doesnt like our titles.
I was considering becoming a paying member but if people behave like that, then whats the point when they get upset about picture titles. |
I hope you haven't sent in your money. If you are going to get this upset over one comment perhaps dpc is not the place for you. Criticism is inherently negative, pointing out shortcomings in photos. You cannot be thin-skinned and expect to be happy here. I feel that by starting this thread, the overly indignant tone you have used, and by your multiple postings repeating the same silly indignation, you have reduced yourself to the level of the person you are complaining about. You have appeased that person's desire to get a higher level of exposure for their protest. And you have indirectly dragged all of us down with you.

What a cry-baby thing to say. I have that comment, and i like to think my title's pretty clever, being a topical pun and all. That doesn't lead me to get all upset. It just leads me to think this person is a bit of an narrow-minded character, who doesn't spend as much time looking at what they're judging as they do trying to boost their ego by pretending they can improve on other peoples' work without giving them any criticism of real substance.

Come on, i'm at least glad someone spoke up about what they were marking down for. I bet there are dozens of such individuals, marking down for similarly arbitrary reasons. I bet some hate the colour yellow and mark down for that, for instance.
I personally think this person is quite brave for letting us know their gripe, odd as it is, knowing all the flak (s)he will get for it once the contest ends.

Hey you all
(s)he is just looking to get people riled up over a stupid 6 letter word. I just had it cut and paste to my entery followed by a "but this doesnt count for you" type message tacked on the end.
I feel for the fella - he seems to really loathe the world circle and theres 500 circle entries he'll be busy!!

I also paste standard replys to submission titles that include the challenge title.
I don't normally reduce the score of a poor title. But, I do remind participants that this is an opportunity to be creative with the titleing, and not to be lazy and use the challenge for the title of the submission.
I judge the picture not the title.

So I take it that you all saying that the person is 'quite brave', 'right in letting his feelings know', 'is just being a critic', and so on by ranking someone down because the title holds the challenge name is actually right.
I think you all are great in having learnt the art of just ignoring all the crap in the world and learn to move on so as to form a world of your own. Congratulation on being the supreme beings...!! No No this in not sarcasm. I am truly happy for you all and will try to learn this trait from you.
But until then I still think I am human, am idealistic, care about others, and do not unnecessarily hurt others just because the other person didn't do things 'my way'.... Period!!
Thanks anyways for everyone's views... and thanks to jseyerle for starting this thread. Atleast it let me know how people think about such issues here.

I don't think (s)he intended to HURT anyone by his comments, and as i say, at least this is better than someone marking you down and not telling you. Why on earth would you submit your photographs for judging in an open forum such as any kind of contest, with no set voting criteria, and then get upset when someone reveals his or her criteria to you? Would you honestly prefer not to know why your photo got a crap mark?

Don't get me wrong. I am open to criticism about my picture and am willing to learn from it... I have recieved a lot of good and informative comments in this challenge too.
What I am not open to is general statements that are of no value and over that which are made not spceific to any picture(in this case my picture too). This cut and paste comment on the pictures was NOT really a comment on any of those individual pictures.
This was really something like.. 'how the hell your picture's title has a 'word' as in the theme of the challenge'
The rant was not about 'just one vote' or the individual who voted like such. This thread was so as to make a point that 'if everyone starts to pick just one point in the picture and rate it low then we will possibly never learn.
All sorts of comments, good or bad are welcome to the picture as long as they tell me what's wrong or right with it.
Anyways, as I said before I had put this to rest with a hope that the individual will go back and say more as to why (s)he think my and all those other pictures titles with the word 'circle' in the title do not fit the picture. I sure think my title NEEDED to have the word 'circle' in it and later when you look at it you will realize it why.
I rest my case now!! You all have a good evening / night / morning.
Many thanks for your views and god bless!!

This time read this post.
The next time you include the title of the challenge in the titleing of your submission, I will probly paste a standard reply about the titleing. HOWEVER, I do not normally mark down on it, I usually spank for not giving time for originality, for basically being lazy.
I will score on the submission as to how the pix stands on its own. That's it.
I hope you are clear. |

"WE as members of DPchallenge know the topic of the challenge â WE do not need to reread the topic every time we reach a photo."
... I highlighted the word WE to confirm if DPC has given some special rights to commenter to express views on behalf of others. Imperical data shows that "abstract" images tend to get lower ratings because its not easy to relate them to theme easily. So I guess there is no harm in mentioning the "theme" in title...esp when the challenge is about photography, and NOT titles for the photograph. Moreover one negative comment on TITLE in no way compensate for 12 positive ones on PHOTOGRAPH :)

For this contest everyone who has the word âcircleâ in their title is getting a lower score. This is a copy and paste version that I am including in every photo that I downgrade due to the title. We as members of DPchallenge know the topic of the challenge â we do not need to reread the topic every time we reach a photo. If circle is in the title and it is appropriate I will most likely not down grade, but it better be good. I am sorry if you do not agree with my method of protest â but scores are all I have.[FINISH]
I had a very similar comment too, and have chosen to ignore it for the time being. I would prefer to read those that give constructive advice. I knew that when I read it that I wouldn't be the only one that would receive it. |

I think photos should be judged for what they are and not for the title ... they do not need a title in the first place.. |
|
|
07/11/2005 02:53:08 AM · #72 |
As has been said - there have been countless threads on the topic of titles. For those who think a title should be optional - I can go along with that and they currently are effectively optional. Some people put "untitled" (which sounds pretentious to me) and some people just put a period or a dash - those work for me as far as neutralizing the title in my voting anyway.

|
|
07/11/2005 03:05:30 AM · #73 |
Since in a themed challenge, every photo called "Untitled" is effectively given the title of the challenge topic. Therefore, it seems entirely illogical for deducting from the score for using the topic in the title, unless all "untitled" photos are likewise penalized.
I assume everyone with an especially clever title will have gotten bonus points as well, particularly if the title includes terms unkown to the voter, such as "Karma is Cyclical." |

If the commenter is not justly rapped on the knuckles for their cut and past, try this.
Have him/her suspended or revoke the ribbon from the Macro V challenge who has also committed the SIN.
"Whats good for the goose is certainly good for the gander." are quotes allowed.... seem like literal "artworks" are they not. |

Yeah, and the only reason poor Karma is cyclical is because Ken cut off her hind legs and makes her an object of pity, on her handicapped cycle. YES! The truth is out! HE did it! Not me!
