I ran into this quicktime discussing this new type of imaging for special effects - this is a pretty hefty file (large) but I thought it's pretty interesting, if not specific.

I don't see any quicktime just a image of an old gas station.

anyway if I want something with a huge dynamic range I'd probably just stack 3-4 images into a 24bit composite

I love using HDRI for lighting my 3d scenes. Just makes them look so much more real. I still have to start creating my own though..
