this is one photo i just took at about 7:20pm tonight of the bear. this bear is a nightly visitor but this is the first time he has been out before i had to slow my shutter down and have a tripod. i was less than 10 yards from this critter(safely in my vehicle) but he was no more worried about me than the man in the moon. this is the smallest one we have had visit our garbage cans but he has recently aquired a tracking collar.

my question is this: i tried an attempt at a clone job(i have only done 3 clone jobs so im still real green when it comes to twchnique here) and im not sure how good it is. if u can do better by all means please help yourself. all i did to the cloned one is contrast boost and a green sat boost with darken a bit. on the orginal all i did was resize and save 4 web.

Show me how great this photo can be please!

Congrats on getting the bear shots, and I think you did a great job cloning out the trash. Do you want to lose the collar, too? I am also a beginner but will try to find a little time to spend on it... if it's any good I may post it here (and if you don't see it, well, you will know what happened!).

the collar was a complete after thought. i didnt remember the collar until i was posting it here. i guess it should be cloned out too huh...give it that "wild kingdom" look.

anyone else have a thought on this?

You have quite a few 'repeat patterns' in the ground cover. especially in the lower left. Something you could do if it's possible is to take another photo of JUST ground cover and clone the ground cover in from the other photo, that way, you have multiple patterns to chose from and not just one smaller spot repeated over and over. Also, without any garbage in the photo, it's hard to tell what's in his mouth and makes him look like he's standing there with his tongue hanging out the side of his face. Just a couple observations, I definately couldn't do any better.

Not entirely happy with it, but here's my semi-quick take. Trying to give the appearance of the front paws sinking into the foliage was tough, and I don't think I fully succeeded. Now, do you think we could have entered this under Advanced Editing rules, having removed "minor" distracting pieces of garbage, and a small collar :o)?

(j/k, of course)

too bad we dont have a wildlife challenge going on but it would definatly have to be advanced editing with special rules!
i just noticed that u took his hot dog out(or is that a cigar;)! thats my fav part of the whole image. gave the bear a playfulness i loved ;) not bad but i see the lines in the image. its hard to give the look of his feet disappearing into the folage. i know i tried to do that myself.but i think you pulled that off better than i did. job well done.

this is a hard image to fix(IMHO) espically with my limited knowledge of photoshop. anyone else want to try? Im off to bed for the night. i have to get up early to take my daughters to mesmeraj(maybe I'll learn a bit myself) digital photography for kids...should be a blast. have a great night everyone and sleep with angels!

Cher, I think the clone job you did was pretty good. The only thing that looks a little weird is oddly enough in the very foreground where you already had foliage--the repeated larger leaf on the lower left. Just watch out for patterns when cloning foliage, because they give it away. Just continue and touch up that part and it's fine!

Cher - I agree with Neil and the others who said you did a good job cloning with the exception of the issues Neil pointed out. I blew up the lower left corner to point out where you can see repeating patterns.

A couple tricks I use is to lasso an area without any unique looking things, use a slightly feathered edge or if you use no feathering, trace around the outline of leaves and stuff so the don't look cut off. Copy and paste to a new layer, then CTRL+T (free transform) and rotate and distort a little so they look much less like their source, then just move it around to cover areas. Cut it into smaller pieces and patch here & there. You can also tweak the brightness/contrast while it is on a sep layer to make it a little different.

The key is to look for those repetitions and elminate them.

Have fun.

the funny thing about the cloneing in the lower left, the repeated larger leaf,i never touched the lower left. i only cloned where the garbage and bag are.:D. i used the right side of the photo as the "clone from"spot. i see what u mean tho. the bottom left now looks out of place.i will rework it. thanks for the help.
