My apologies to all on my Obsolete challenge. I want to let everyone know it was not on purpose. The SC is correct, there sre 2 small spots that couldn't have been removed except by spot editing. Don't remember doing it, but I must have, because they are definitly on the original and not on my entry,

no need for apologies. sometimes it's hard to remember which challenge you're editing for and we do things without thinking. it's an awesome shot and i'm sorry for your DQ.

Shame the dust bunnies. Despite the DQ, you still have an awesome image. Thanks for not throwing things at us and reacting with a boo hiss.

Still stays on my favorites list! What a great photo!

Heather, I have 3 kids, I don't need to add to anymore whining to my life:) Thanks for the kind words.

Hey! When a photo is DQed, does it get taken off peoples favorites? I seem to remember putting it in mine but now its gone???

Odd that it still shows up as having been selected 12 times as a favorite, but your right, it doesn't show up in your profile. But it DOES show up on the photo. lol Try going to the photo which should be listed at the bottom of challenge results and selecting it again. See if that fixes it.

robert --

contrary to popular belief, we DON'T enjoy DQing photos. as a parent i'm sure you're familiar with the 'this is gonna hurt me way more than it hurts you!' mentality, and that's kind of what it feels like.

it's a great image. still a winner in my book.

Small spots?

I have a hot pixel in my camera. In one case, the hot spot showed up in one of my entries. In another case, the hot spot disappeared when I resized my image for the challenge. Why it stayed in one case and disappeared in another is a mystery for me. I was concerned about the second case because I didn't want the hot spot to be in the final image. So when it serendipitously disappeared in the latest entry, I was relieved.

What I'm getting at is that perhaps your "small spots" did the same thing when you resized your image -- they disappeared. I'm not saying that that's the case, but it's possible.

If the SC suspects a picture was improperly edited, they should attempt to duplicate the steps used to arrive at the final image. (Perhaps they do that...I wouldn't know.) You may not have elided the spots...they may have simply disappeared during one of your routine (and legal) editing steps.

Something to think about.

That's how we found the spots. :) We were trying to duplicate the steps he listed for us to verify the image and when cropped, and edited per the steps provided to us, it didn't match up. Just a couple of dust specks, nothing huge like a missing tree.
Just wanted to let you know we DO do this.

OH Goodness. So he cropped out a dust speck. Let's all ban him for life. Goodness gracious. When is that rule going to be updated anyway? Dust is a way of life with digital SLR's.
07/07/2005 11:04:42 PM · #12
WEll, perhaps in that case two dust specks shouldn't be a reason for DQ.

this really isn't a thread to debate the ruleset.

yes, dust is a way of life. but the basic ruleset is the way it is (at least for now) for MANY reasons.

we're not "banning" anyone. he didn't follow the rules and admitted it. it sucks, but it's fair to everyone that way.

wait a second...we can't spot edit? just joking! just joking!

Not to hijack my own thread, but it's not that big a deal. Right now our London members as well as David Ey (lost his son) need our thoughts, prayer and support. These folks have real world problems.

You know, a lot more than once i didn't submit a very good image to a basic rules challenge just because i couldn't remove the dust specks. I just can't do that, and i wouldn't blame anyone voting an image lower for dust -- not removing it just means you don't care.

So, from this viewpoint, the rule makes zero sense. Don't get me wrong, if it were up to me, i'd make most of the challenges basic or straigh-out-of-camera. But removing dust should be an exception.

Yep, dust is a way of life. It's pointless to clean your camera's sensor every week just to enter challenges for dpc. When in the real world, you can clone out a speck if you want to make a print.

Sorry to hear about the DQ, but not sorry it bumped me up to 17th place.
The DQ is still one of my faves.......places to eat, I mean. LOL j/k, the teepees will stay in my favorites in spite of all the accusations and disparaging remarks in this thread about you. ;-)

Everyone needs to laugh this evening - tough day for all.

Where did that Happy Thread go...

To the person who said, why bother cleaning the cameras sensor just for a challange? I clean my lense every time I take a picture as a rule. I don't have a slr but my camera is my passion and I cherish it so much. It takes 2 seconds to look and wipe it off. So why just not check it before you shoot? Just my 1 and 1/2 cents.
