I think it would be fun to have the following hidden egg feature in the site--though there's probably no way to legally do it.
"Hidden Egg" Feature. In every challenge, a respected professional photograph that the SC (or person suggesting the challenge) thinks meets the challenge is inserted into the voting pool. At the end of the challenge, it appears in the results, so you can see how voters rated it and the comments for improvement it received. It is of course credited to the real photographer, but doesn't really count in the rankings (e.g., it can't win a ribbon).
I just think it would be interesting and entertaining to see, for a given challenge topic, how the community votes and comments on an image which is obviously "successful" and considered a good photograph by the photography or publishing community.
Brings a little extra fun to the challenge results. Extra fun results: some will post comments that they recognize the photo. It will be even more fun when they think your shot is the hidden egg and leave that as a coment!

While there are many ideas proposed everyday to this site that may be of interest to some - I think this is one of the better ideas I have heard in a long time. If only we could stop the threads that discuss which one they think is the hidden egg ;P

dang. I thought you were going to suggest that one photog be assigned to hide an egg somewhere in the picture. The first person to comment (on the pic, not in a thread) on it "wins"
:) |

creative and solid idea (except for the photograph choosing, which wouldn't be the masses concern anyway). I thought you were going to say something along the lines of a photo that is revealed once you have viewed all entries in a particular challenge...this would promote maximum photo viewings.
I like your idea though. Anyway to incorporate my idea into yours to promote interesting voting patterns and more voting period?

I like this idea just as much as the original idea. Would get more people to look at more photos. AND I bet photogs would put 'false' eggs in shots just to create some buzz.

great idea! it would be interesting to see if "artistic" photos hold up without people being told that they are supposed to be art...

Put that National Geographic photo of the Afgan girl by Steve McCurry in there,
and then watch how many people think it's Librodo's entry. :-) |

Kinda like the old Playboy covers. The first thing one would do would be to try and find the Bunny...
Edit: OK... Maybe the second thing! :-O

I bet one of my favorites, Henri Cartier-Bresson wouldn't even get a 5 for most of his work. Comments: too contrasty; would look better in color; not in focus. I seriously think the voters on this site do not stop to reflect long enough on "emotive" images, just move on to the next eye-candy. But then, I think it's the nature of the beast in a venue such as this. I think more emotive images do better in a gallery where people are not "just trying to get through them".

I think it's a hell of an idea. And this being a teaching site, a workshop, I think the usage of images would fall under "fair use" terms. After the voting was tallied, the image could always revert to being a link to the page on which it resides on the web...
I think it's a terrific idea.

Thanks everyone for your enthusiasm. Anyone know if there are copyright issues if we included them, even temporarily? Is anyone on the site council interested in "championing" this to get it implemented? I think it would be a blast if we can pull it off! |

Brilliant idea!
I´m also curios to see the results. And it would probably be a boost for the ego of the photographer that would get a higher rank! If that would happen??? |

A quote I heard somewhere comes to mind: "It is easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission."
or another one: "Don't ask, don't tell."

I believe it's "fair use"under copyright laws, as long as the original doesn't stay archived.

Especially as photographers, we should respect intellectual property of others. We should not use any photographs without the written permission of the photographer, and I see no advantage for any known pro to participate.
That being said I seriously doubt that the "ringer" photograph would score well here. It is like Kubrick & movies. He was considered THE master of his craft and is idolized by filmmakers and those of us who have passionately studied film, but he received harsh critics from critics and a luck warm reception from the general public.
