OK - it's impossible to comment on every entry challenge - at least it is for me. So I'm interested in how people decide what to comment on.
When I score pics 8 to 10, I could say WOW - well done, etc. That would be easy and it would make people feel good but it's not necessarily useful feedback.
When scoring 1-3 I feel bad saying anything much.
That leaves the big middle where photos are generally good to great and where one has at least some opinion as to what could make them better.
How do y'all decide what to comment on?

I always comment on anything I score 1,2,3 and sometimes 4. I always comment on the highest I score - 9,10 and sometimes 8. Then when I go back and make adjustments to voting, I usually comment on any I bump down and some I bump up. So all my lowest, highest, and a good selection from the middle. |

Well, I usually connect with a photo immediately and let them know what I like about it, or I give my opinion on what is wrong or could possibly push it over the edge of greatness. If I don't have an emotion one way or the other, I vote-n-go.
Let me put that another way(as I talk this out, I am finding out my own voting style as well).
I reserve 1 & 2's for shot that I personally feel are entered simply to have an update button. Shots that have obviously had no though or time put into them. If your not gonna put in the time and effort, neither am I. This is a very subjective point of view I realize, but I'll stand by it.
3 & 4's are for those shots that have either (in my opinion) missed the topic altogether or have massive technical problems. If the photo is intriguing to me, I will lend my primitive expertise where I can.
5's are for shots that meet the challenge, but basically do nothing for me other than that. Probably won't comment on too many of those.
6 & 7's are for good shots that have little technical errors and mostly meet the challenge. I will again comment on those that strike my fancy or that I feel I have some useful learning comments.
8, 9's are for near perfect (technically) and grab you by the balls visually. I comment on some to show my respect for their work. Usually don't offer improvements at this stage as the photographer obviously had a firm grasp of what they wanted and how to get it.
10's are my sign of bowing in humble awe! Again comments for respect and flattery are almost always given and warrented.
That's it. BTW, I am averaging about 5 on my entries, so take it for what it's worth!

In thinking about the comments I have made they fall into the following categories:
1. Absolutely moving. In which case I try to express why in a way that is more than just pure affirmation.
2. Pretty Good but could use some help. Then I attempt to describe this in my limited vocabulary and range of expertise.
3. Not so Great. This is the hardest because you know that person probably didn't put up the image to get pounded. I tend to skip these more often than I should because I'm not especially tactful, and it's hard for me to know that I've hurt someone's feelings. Besides, my images are not so great and I just imagine those people saying "Who is she to judge?".
Another good question might be: "How do y'all decide what NOT to comment on?"
For me that would be the ones that I just don't have the knowledge to critique fairly; or the ones that don't do anything for me, yet I can't figure out why.

If I vote 4 or below, I comment for sure.
If the photo is 7 or above, I **may** comment, but oftentimes the 7+ photos stand on their own. Generally, 6-7 may go without comment, 8 or higher will most probably have a comment, but then again, I have yet to break mid 5's, so who am I to give critical comment to something I just rated at a 9?
My comments are typically reserved for the ones I didn't rate so well.

I try to comment on my 3 or 4 favorite of the challenge with what I liked about them.
Then a lot of my comments are for photos I liked for some reason, but thought could have been executed better; that is photos with a good concept but maybe I think framing, lighting, composition, or something else could have improved it.
I tend to skip over photos that seem unoriginal, uninspired, or really common for a particular topic. I try to vote on a few of these, particularly ones that I give low scores to, but more often than not I don't.
So I'd say the most comments I make go out to photos I give 6's and 7's to which I think could have been 8's, 9's, or 10's. |

I'm probably hated for my voting/commenting ways...
If the image fits the challenge (even a little out of the box sometimes, if I can see their intentions with the photo then it fits they get an automatic 5. Then rate other items as shown and if it really great I add 1 point where I really think they excelled.
Here are two example from the metal challenge...
fits challenge=5
Color/lighting=1
DOF/focus=1
Wow factor/uniqueness=1
Attractiveness=1
Very nice image, pleasant to look at, could be advertisement. Nice DOF and colors. Good job.
---or this one that I did not score very well.---
Your Comment: Fits challenge=0
Color/lighting=1
DOF/focus=1
Wow factor/uniqueness=0
Attractiveness=0
I did get lots of PMs about my voting saying how much it helped them see what I was looking at. I think something like this should be how the voting is done by default to help people understand and maybe stop questioning why they did crappy. Just my opinion.

I don't think you can ever get people to stop questioning why they did crappy. With this the question would just change to why is my picture only worth a 5.

When I began I used to comment on every photo in a challenge though not for too long! I quickly got to a point where I felt I no longer wanted to waste my time on commenting images which were soooo poor that if their owners couldn't figure out that they were poor or what the main problems about them were it was pointless my wasting my time doing so. Harsh but I'm being honest.
I then commented less but still did my best to comment on images I felt were weak in one or more areas but still had something that caught my eye in a positive sense.
Although I mostly got grateful feedback I did get some rather indignant messages from people who are frankly far too thin-skinned to get the most from a site like this and have far too inflated an ego about their own work.
Now I basically only comment those images I really like or those images I feel I have what I think may prove to be something particularly helpful to say.
