i just shot my first 'real' assignment for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. what a trip--i have SO MUCH to learn...

the assigment was to get some shots to illustrate a story about a local county social services program that employees disabled folks to package stuff that dries out latex paint (it's used at the county landfill where people take their paint cans. wet paint is considered 'hazardous material' and costs more to dispose; dry paint is non-hazardous.). all in all, the county saves money, and these people have self-affirming work.

i can't tell you how stressful this is, learning the ropes. i get the assignment, but have absolutely no clue what to expect. so i go in, meet the program director, and start shooting like mad, from every angle i can find, trying to capture as much stuff as i can as it happens, and not trying to orchestrate anything. i'm just trying to document what i found in a way that shows what they're doing in a somewhat interesting manner. and i have no friggin idea as to what's the best way to do it because I'VE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE!

i popped off almost 100 frames, culled those down to 35, then down to 20, then down to 11, and the photo director picked 4. and he simply told me, "Well, you did it." so, i guess i can breathe again...just hope they have enough space in the section to run a photo with the story!

now i can't tell what i'm anticipating more--tomorrow's paper, or the delivery truck...

Gee I like 2, 46 and 54. Guess that is why I fix computers and am not a photo director..

Sweet! I think 77's the one.

hehe.. nice one :)

Good job, and thank you for sharing. I like 2,54 and 77 personally.

Sure there is soo much to learn when you start out with assignments like this. First of all finding the important parts of the story to be told and trying to capture that is very hard.

You should try to relax a little, I think you did a great job, and you did your best.. Nothing more you can do :)

What kind of a lens did you use? Some of these shots are asking for a wider lens, imo.

i used the kit lens that comes with a rebel, but you are so right--wider would be better!

Btw, 77 is not the one i like best. 39 or 43 or 54 are better.

this is the tough part--differentiating between a good standalone image, and finding one that illustrates the story. my guess is that they will go with 77 because it not only shows four people actively engaged in the process, it includes someone in a wheelchair.

Very cool, congratulations - looks like a job well done! I too, like 2, 54, and 77, but I think you're right on about 77, it captures the spirit of the entire story.

well im a photo editor (sometimes) for the school paper down here, and I would go with 77, but it needs some cropping. I think they're pretty good shots.

thanks! basically, i submit them at 10" on the longest side, 200dpi, with basic color corrections, all shot in Adobe RGB mode. the paper takes care of all the cropping and other tweaking, including grayscaling (if they so chose). more on this in a coming thread ;-)

linda thanks to you, too! (and i swear i'm mailing your bag off tomorrow!!!)

29, 39, 43 are all good newspaper type shots. Good work.
