Hi All,
I'm going to be taking a head shot photo for someone (my boyfriend! yikes!) who is joining a prestigious computer science blog site. It's going to be a b&w pic.

Does anyone have any insight on how to make people look professional and GOOD in terms of lighting, backgrounds, etc, for a shot like this?

Thanks!
Jeannel

Don't panic, just shoot in manual mode and use natural light. Either just head outdoors or get close to a window if the weather is crappy.

I'm sure a dozen people will tell you about studio lights, alien bees, reflectors..but if you don't have a lot of experience (and even if you DO) getting outside is a great way to let mother nature worry about the details. You just take a photo from an angle using a composition that works for your man!!!

i always prefer a slight turn of the head in profile for a head shot - front ons look like they belong on wanted posters.
Somewhere i read the rule for a head shot (or a portrait or whatnot) is the nose should be completely out of the cheek (90degree profile) or should fit into the cheek completely. Does that make sense? maybe someone else can describe it better?

I would highly suggest doing some "Google" searches on headshots and look at others to get your ideas. Head shots are just that, just the head, limiting distractions, like jewelry. Acting web sites have tons of them and so do Talent agencies, like IMG or Ford.

Hope this helps!
