I'm in the market for a tripod and have narrowed down to the Velbon MAXi 347GB and the Velbon UltraMAXi F. I'm not sure which one I should buy. Stability is an important factor, but due to budget constraints I'm restricting myself to less than $150. The MAXi 347GB sells for around US $90 and the UltraMAXi F sells for around US $130 (these are approximate prices).
The differences:
* the Ultra MAXi F is slightly lighter than the 347GB
* the Ultra MAXi has a 4-way panhead whereas the MAXi 347GB has a 3-way panhead. I know what 3-way panhead means but I don't know what 4-way means. Can anybody enlighten me?
* the difference in the maximum height is around 2" (the lesser height is also fine with me)
I would be using the tripod for still photos (with a digital camera) and also for video (with a digital camcorder) - the size of the screw is ok for both the camera and camcorder.
Could someone help me decide by providing their suggestions and comments on both these models?
As I said, stability is important. Additionally, a good smooth panhead is also important.
Thanks! :)

I was looking at the same tripods, but in the end decided on the 347E and am very happy with it :)

Thanks, colda. I did look at the 347E as well, but decided that one of these two would be better.
Does anybody else have suggestions or comments about these?

3-way pan heads (typical pan heads) rotate around the vertical axis, tilt fore and aft, and tilt sideways up to 90 degrees in ONE direction only and just a few degrees (if at all) in the oither direction. A 4-way panhead can tilt 90 degrees either left OR right. This can be very useful when you're setting up on heavily tilted ground, among other benefits.

Robt,
Thanks a lot for the explanation of 4-way panheads. That makes a lot of sense now! I guess I'll have one more look at these two - right now the balance is tilted towards the 4-way model (UltraMAXi F). |

I strongly recommend it. You don't need it that often but when you do it's a real blessing; saves a LOT of leg-adjusting on the fly.
