The lighting is quite harsh and some of the feathers are blown. Bringing up the shadows would make this even worse. With this range between shadows and highlights you're best to blend two exposures so you can brighten the shadows while keeping the detail in the highlights.

Interesting capture.

Try something like this:

May help bring out the shadows without blowing out the highlights too much.
