use fast glass! 2.8 may not be fast enough in a lot of situations. Use 2nd sync flash for cool effects. Don't be afraid of iso 800/1600! Keep your shutter over 1/125 if you can (except with the cool effects shots ;-) )

i would sudjest shooting shutter priority at around 1/125 if you are going to stop any action.. if it is blur you want, perhaps aperature priority is fine.
Set your camera on spot metering, and spot meter at the face (there is too many bright lights and dark backgrounds to do anything other than spot meter on the face). Set the camera to overexpose 1/2 or 1 stop, as skin is that much lighter than middle grey.
check out my website for some picture ideas if you want

300D has no spot meter... or selectable metering for that matter :-/

I was thinking of using a external flash but i dont want to distract the person on stage.
Any recommends on a fast lens?

sigma 30mm 1.4, 20mm 1.8, 50 1.4/1.8, 85 1.8, 100 2.0, 135L 2.0 :-)
you can also sometimes get away with the 70-200 2.8 IS I've heard.

I get by at concerts (well, I've only shot one) with just the kit lens and no flash. Just bump up the ISO to 1600, and set the shutter speed to 1/60.

I've never been allowed to use a flash at a concert. There's a difference between a concert and a show. I've used a flash at pub shows, totally different tho.
Use a fast shutter. I disagree that F2.8 isn't good enough. IT's fine, just use a shutter of 1/90 or more |

don't use a flash unless you have permission to do so. I like the effect of shooting in low light...even without a fast lens you can get some beautiful shots.
//flickr.com/photo_exif.gne?id=25857568 is a shot of Lila Downs, using a cheap zoom lens, 1/10, f/6.7, 300 mm, iso 1000, without getting out of my seat at the back of the theater. It isn't sharp, but its vibrant and it captures the moment--i think--without being invasive.
I even turn off the preview and only shoot manual to avoid the assist light--not that my slow lens focuses well in low light anyways.

Nice shot, shame about the face in the background but great mood and atmosphere. |
