70,691 clicks, and now the mirror flips up and the camera making the clicking sound, but the curtain refuses to rise...

stay tuned, help is on the way ;-)

Oh my, what do you do in a case like that?

Pretty good going, Skip. Mine only lasted for 11,500. :-(

Mirror lockup is a feature, not a bug. ;-)

Good luck getting it resolved, but whatever you do, DON'T run out and buy a 350D! I've got enough competition already from e301, Marbo, Nico_Blue, Keith Maniac...

I've got to be getting close to that on my little P&S, what will I do if it dies?

Maybe it will have a mysterious 'accident'?

Guess I had better slow down then...this weekend I flipped my 20D for the second time...20,458 clicks...

Mine did the exact same thing once I got to about 8,000 shots.
We took it to a camera repair place and the guy there said it'd need a whole new shutter which would cost about $300 if they did it there in the shop. But, luckily, it was still under warranty, so we just sent it back to Canon and they fixed it for us for free.

Is there a way to find out how many times the camera has shoot a pict?

what to do, what to do, ummmmmm...

well certainly, one would attempt resuscitation...

then there is the appropriate grieving period...

there is the deep, wrenching emptiness of not having something in hand to call your own...

there is the begging, pleading, stealing, accompanied by all sorts of rationalizations...

then there is the waiting, the tortuous, gut-ripping waiting, waiting to see what will become of me...

and hopefully, by friday, we'll know...

Sorry about that, but looking at your portfolio you have certainly made good use of those clicks! At this rate the shutter will probably pay for itself in a fraction of that time!

how do you know how many click, im sure im not near it yet but would like to know,
thanks

P&Ss have a totally different shutter mechanism... I've never heard of one dying on a P&S... they're pretty much indestructable.

Judging from the recent threads, what you have been up to, where you are heading, I would say this is the catalyst that pushes you into the 1Ds world, or a 20D at the very least.
:)

how do you check how many times your shutter has been released?
my rebel xt must be close to 2000 now.

Well, I'm finally in the market for a second camera - looks like the 350D will be it - but at least it will be an eon before I'll be on any list of serious competition. I'm just researching lens right now . . .

You just check the image number ie: IMG_0334.jpg would be image number 334.

Phew, that's good to hear. It would be a good excuse to get a dSLR, but I've been looking at the prices on those babies & their lenses and WOW!

Skip, I hope that whatever comes of this, you are better off for it. Judging by what I know of you from DPC, if anybody deserves to have top-flight gear, it's you. I'll send good vibes your way, though I think you do a great job at creating your own good vibes.

My 10D just clicked over for the second (or is it the third) time too. Though Canon replaced the mirror box I don't think they touched the shutter.

All is well at the moment - touch wood

after reading this thread i cant help but ask how many shutter actuations does the 20D or 350D does have before it dies? Any release/statement from Canon?

My Oly E10 has a shutter limit of around 20,000 (im currently at 10K+) and my Nikon D70 has around 100,000 (current at 3k) before it dies.

im sure the 20D has more shutter life than the XT. anyone?

This has been brought up for discussion lots of times on lots of forums. I don't know that there is definitive answer. Shutters (or mirros, etc - if one quits it all stops working) are mechanical in nature. As you spend more money on teh body, you get better guts - more precision, better designs, better materials.

Pro camera are good for 100k or more actuations.
semi-pro, (20D) should be good for 50k.
amateur ones (300,350) probably have a design life or MTBF of 25-30k.

Now it depends on how much you shoot of course, but I am averaging 5-6k per year for the past 2 years. I got my Rebel Jan 4 and just crossed the 3k barrier, so I am still on track for this year (i suspect with shooting weddings and having more memory cards that may increase...). Anyway, at 30k I willl get 5 years from my camera.

I have not kept/used a digital camera for 5 years yet. I suspect the rebel will be sold or retired before it wears out.

Now to the next question - you didn't ask but someone will - i have read that the cost for repair is about $250-300. Same as any film camera, except maybe harder to dissasemble. Or is that reassemble?

Did you already shoot your freelance assignment for the paper??

and

Wonder what it might bring used in it's current condition. Probably not much but it would still be something to help with the next purchase...

what I want to know is how do you know how many shots you have taken sooo precisely???
