Is there a function on the Rebel XT to lock focus other than holding down the shutter half way? Sort of like exposure lock but for focus?

In that seminar I went to a month or two ago, that was something he suggested that I thought was such a good idea--except that there's no function I can find on my camera to do that. What camera has that?

I do sometimes do it by focusing and then turning off automatic focus. But that's not too convenient. A button on the back like lock exposure which serves to focus and lock the focus would be great, if one exists!

I believe there is a custom function for that. Check the meanings of all the settings for the custom functions.

I remember reading about this in the 10D manual or maybe it was my film camera manual. I don't know if it's available on the rebel.

edit: I just checked the manual online and it doesn't appear that there is a custom function for this on the rebel.

Thanks for your research, Colette. That's too bad. I wish there were an equivalent on the Rebel.

Does anyone know if the 20D supports this?

Custom function 4 might give you some flexibility. It allows you to switch the exposure lock button to be focus lock and allows the halfway press of the shutter button to be exposure lock.

This is probably only useful in modes other than full manual. Now I have to check my film camera manual at home as it appears that the 10D operates the same as the rebel in this regard.

++ it's 4.1, I've just switched to 4.3 to see how that goes though. It means I don't have exposure lock, which I think should be good for varying light conditions on moving objects. Probably good to stay in the exposure lock one (4.1) for portraits and non moving things though :-)
