If your planning on coming up, cross at the 1000 Islands bridge north of Saracuse. You'll end up smack dab in the middle of one of the most beautiful areas in either NY or Ontario, depending on what side your on. You could honestly spend the entire week taking pictures of this area. Take an Uncle Sam boat cruise out of Alexandria Bay if your on the US side or a Gananoque boat cruise if your on the Canadian side. Both offer 1, 2, and 3 hour cruises that will bring you through the islands. Once you cross into Canada, your only 2 1/2 hours from Toronto, 1 hour from Ottawa and 2 hours from Montreal. TRUST ME, it's worth it!! And don't worry about the boarder guards, as long as your honest with them and have a valid passport or birth certificate, you'll be fine.

Sucks that we have to have a birth certificate or passport to get back into the US now

Just make sure to bring some valid photo ID. Passport not required, but bring it along if you have it. Also, don't be surprised if they do the 20 questions things if you have a prior record, even for something like DUI or misdemeanor possesion. Make sure to be on your best behaviour. Trying to stare down a Customs official or being standoffish in responding will just get you pulled out of line for a more detailed inspection. Getting irritated is also a good way to get into trouble. And above all, tell the truth. Take it from me, I work with these guys everyday and its not fun for ANYONE when people get all out of joint because the Inspector asks a few questions.

Niagara Falls is a good bet for sure. The falls are awesome and there is lots of gawdy things to see. Toronto is a sure bet too. If you guys have the time, head over to Ottawa, the capital. And like others have said, Montreal is awesome in the summer. Always something way cool going on.

I was thinking of making a loop Toronto -> Montreal and back
Also, this may be a dumb question but how do I change currency?

You can exchange US funds for Canadian funds at any bank.

I had a similar exchange with the border guard going into Canada only I was with my boss on a bus trip and we were going to Windsor from Detroit for the evening.

her: Where ya headed?
me: Canada
her: Big place, narrow it down.
me: Ontario
her: Big place, narrow it down.
me: Uhhh Windsor.
her: Where ya from.
me: United States.
her: Big place, narrow it down.
me: Michigan
her: Big place, narrow it down.
me: Kalamazoo.
her: What's the purpose of your visit?
me: Spend lots of money.
her: Enjoy your visit.

My boss was in the passenger seat, worrying that at any minute the Canadian Police were going to arrest us for being American and give us the cavity search special. He insisted on doing all the talking on the way back. The US guard basically glanced at our driver's licenses and waved us through.

When I was a kid growing up near Niagara Falls, we would ride our bikes down to near the border crossing to people-watch. In July, it can easily hit 30°C or about 90°F. We would search for Americans coming over the border to snow ski or participate in winter sports. It was the funniest thing to see folks who thought that once they crossed that little dashed line they would be in winter.

The USA-based Weather Network continues the myth by showing Canada as a huge white blob. At least CNN shows some Canadian weather. But, every winter we hear them blame a local New York snowstorm on some "Arctic cold front coming down from Canada". I guess that we just can't shake the reputation?

Use the Internet to investigate what you need to bring and what you can do and not do, both coming into and out of the country. Both countries have excellent tourist and travel information on the government web sites.

I have been crossing the border virtually every month for thirty years for work. I rarely have even the slightest problem from either government. Take Beagleboy's advise and just come on up and have some fun. The lights are on and we are all happy to have you visit us.

Oh, here's another entertaining border story:

I'm six years old at the time. In the car crossing the border with Mom, Dad, and my four year old bother. As we pass through the border I see a battery of aluminum drawers along a wall where you end up if they ask you to pull over to have your car searched. We got through fine, but I was curious about the drawers, so I asked my Dad, "Daddy, what are all those drawers for?" "Oh," he replied, "thats where they put peoples' heads after they chop them of if you get pulled over!"

Of course I instantly took this as gospel truth, but thought no more of it, as we were through & on our way.

Wouldn't you know it, on our way back we were asked to pull over to where the "drawers" were, where my dad got out & went inside! Well, I absolutely flipped out!!! Holy crap, my dad was about to get his head chopped off and there the three of us were, sitting in the car!!!

Happily, he didn't get his head chopped off, only had to pay some duty. But he probably wished he was decapitated after my Mom got through tearing him a new one for scaring the crap out of me!

:-D

Beagleboy makes quick notes about this thread. Must inform superiors that BCSH (Border Crossing Severed Head) program has been compromised.

Come to montreal!!! It's festival season here, if you look around a bit its less expensive and there's a great nightlife, tons of things to do, the girls are beautiful and we have good beer. (If you like microbrewers, there are some very nice around)

I flew into Winnipeg from Europe. I gave the customs guy my passport to check. He asked, "Do you have any identification?" I said, "I just gave it to you." But that was it - I was first through, and quickly. (1984)
