im trying to find a nice lens for fully body portraits. i was thinking the canon 17-40 but would that be too wide?

It maybe too wide. The subject may look a little distorted. As far as focal lengths go, it all depends on how near or far you are to your subject. If you do not have much room. I would suggest a 24-70mm zoom lens. If you are looking at Prime lenses, I would say a 35mm or a 50mm would be ok.

If you do have room to play with, I would say go with a 70-200mm lens. You will have the flexibility of a full body shot as well as close ups. If you choose a prime lens, I would say an 85mm or 100mm would be vey nice.

What kind of DSLR do you have? Your profile shows a Point and Shoot Camera.

My 2 cents.

Good Luck!!

The 17-40 should be fine. Most full body work is done in the 35-50 range by my understanding. With that said...the 24-70L is a great option for this, but is really expensive. I second the idea of a 35mm prime, or even a 30mm prime (sigma).

i have the rebel xt and a 50 f/1.8 right now. and i found it a little long for what i'm doing. the 24-70 sounds nice but it's a little expensive, so is the 35L which i think was suggested. it sounds like i'll have to go third party or wait a little bit for the funds to come in. i'll research on the third party wides. anyone else have any suggestions? im up for primes, im fine with them

If you are going for the 3rd Party lens. I would recommend the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di. I had this lens and it was excellent. The only reason why I don't have it anymore is because I upgraded to the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L.

You can get the Tamron at a reasonable cost. I actually got mine off of eBay for $290.00. I just found that the canon 24-70mm is a better build and much more durable. As far as optics, the Tamron is almost as good as the canon.
