I recall seeing this discussed on dpc, but i searched for half an hour and found nothing.

How would i go about checking, how many shots i have taken with my 300D?
I took a random shot and checked the info on it. It says 825-2571 on the top right corner and the file path is "DCIM -> 825CANON -> IMG_2571.JPG"

EDIT: Corrected 827-2571 to 825-2571

Assuming you have not reset it, or gone over 9999, your counter says 2571.

However, there are some caveats to this: we found out that it's possible to pick up a count from another camera if you change cards with another Canon user and there are shots on the camera. As I recall, it takes the higher count, be it from the card or the camera. (This is documented in a thread about this somewhere on DPC)

So assuming you haven't rolled it over, and that you haven't reset it or picked up a count from another camera, your count is 2571 pics.

Oh. What's the 825 then?

Do any of the following reset the number back to 0

Updating the firmware - such as the Russian Hack

Selecting Auto reset on File Numbering in the menu

Selecting clear all camera settings in the menu

cant you just count up the images on your PC?

go to the folder where all your images are stored and right click to bring up a pop up menue window and select properties. it will tell you how many files are there.

I don't store all my photos. Only the ones i think, that i might need later on

i dont store all mine either, but counting all my files gets me a good guess Im well over 50,000 images with my d60. I actually may be over 60,000 as I still have a lot of photos that I have yet to put on my main PC.

Well picture 1 starts off at 100_0001.jpg. I believe the first three digits are incremented every 100 shots, so that would put you on 82,571 shots, assuming I've done my maths right.

the number on the right should be folders. Each folder contains 100 photos. the right number, after 9999 shots will reset to 0. I believe CRW shots are also numbered seperately from jpeg images.

just a quick semi-related question: is the counter like a sort of mileage thing? like where if you sell your camera used they'll ask you for how many shots you've taken with it?

Many people care a lot about how many "clicks" a shutter in a camera has. The 300D is supposed to live between 30k and 50k.

edit: a replacement costs $300.

Hmm.. I bought this camera just this week from ebay.de (germany). Seller seemed trustable and everything looked good to me

The second i opened the package, i checked for possible signs of use. Everything was totally clean. Not a single scratch or fingerpring of any kind. Mirror was totally clean without any dust on it.

The 80k clicks on 300D sounds rather odd.

Hang on, maybe I'm getting confused..

Pics I took a while ago show names of 153_5316, as an example. That is 5,316 shots on my 300D.

I assume the first digit increments every 10,000 shots, which would agree with my original statement.

Hmmm. Can anyone provide filenames and shutter counts for their 300D/10D's?

Oh, and did i mention, that there was not a single speck of dust on the sensor (checked 2 days after i bought it)

I haven't used the CF card anywhere else.

my 300d says 706-0691 - i have taken 70,691 images with it. the 706 is the number of folders that the firmware has created, the 0691 is the number of clicks since it last rolled over. keeping in mind, all i do is click all day ;-)

Okay, now it says 900-0003. So I must've taken 8,994, not 9,994...or something like that. So now I'm at 9,003? Is that right?
