i haven't ben here very long but i've noticed how this site emphasizes the need for constructive critique by the members and registered users. i think that there should be some insentive to more indepth comments. maybe like instead of having one option to click whether a comment is helpful or not, maybe from 1 to 3 on how helpful it is. and then whenever someone gets enough points or their percentage of helpful comments to total comments exceeds a certain number or percentage they are given some priviledges or something. maybe this would help?
anyone have any other ideas?

I somewhat agree. It has been suggested before in one form or another.
Even the way it is though, if a comment is helpful, it is marked helpful. If it is not, it is not. What more needs to be said?? I would personally ban all comments in the forums about comments on challenge entries. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE COMMENTS YOU RECEIVE, DON'T FLAG THEM AS HELPFUL - DONE - SIMPLE.
woops, there I go. Sorry, art.

lol no worries unhelpful comments don't bother me personally. i dont think i've ever not selected a comment as helpful. i just came up with this idea because a lot of people on this site seem unsatisfied by some of the comments they're getting. :(

I suppose 3 options would work because there is a "neutral" state. I make comments that I know are not helpful in regards to photography, but just trying to get the person to smile or something - if not flagged as helpful, I am ok with that. Then adding the other side - maybe "This comment was hurtful" would be ok also. I would want to know if my comments were causing people pain and suffering.

Actually, i'd like to see the helpful box checked as default, and then if you don't think the comment was helpful you uncheck it.
This will fix all the people that don't mark any comments helpful because I guess it's too much work to check a box.
Also, people should realize there is a difference between "this comment was helpful" and "this comment made me feel good." Too many people fail to check any comment that points out anything bad about their image while checking a comment that simply says "cool" as helpful. For what it's worth, "out of focus" is more helpful then "cool."
But... people can do what they want with their little box so i'll get off my soap box now.

How about awarding a weekly ribbon to the best commenter? At the end of the week (or challenge) everyone could vote for the person who gave them most thoughtful comment. Whomever gets the most votes gets the ribbon. You could put a check box next to the "this comment was helpful" check box, that says "this person deserves the commenters ribbon" or something like that. |

So I put a comment on a shot like, I think your DOF is a touch shallow for this particular composition. You think you DOF is spot on so you check off the box that says the comment is hurtful. Is this any different from sending out nasty PM's to commentors or calling out people in the forums? I don't see how this is conducive to getting people to comment. I think what we really need is a contingient of people like me who will make these types of comments but are thick skinned enough not to care if people make nasty pm's to us. If we had enough of us, you know the Constructive Commentors who are Too Cool for their Own Good Club (maybe this name needs to be reworked...) and people started getting good constructive critism, maybe it would grow...

I'd like to see two check boxes... one for "Noted" and one for "Helpful," and if you check Helpful, then it automatically checks the Noted box. That way, we still only have to check one box but we have a way to indicate that we've seen a comment whether it was helpful or not. |

Comments sometimes (always) get to the the ego. We all want to have the perfect pic and even believe that an average pic is good. Like this comment I received was excellent I hope everyone would do something similar.
Comment by sabfoto:
Fits challenge=5
Color/lighting=1
DOF/focus=1
Wow factor/uniqueness=1
Attractiveness=0
TRUTH HURTS but trust me, the person was correct.
As for voting for the commenter, they can simply check the comments marked usefull. The person with the most usefull gets the ribbon, quite simple I think. |

this is probably the most straight-forward, simple solution, and i really hope it happens... |

Looking at gpringsloo's comment reminds me off a small app I wrote a while ago called Comment-o-matic. Basically it used tick-boxes to fill in phrases I commonly used. I used it for a while and got a number of positive PMs. I got bored in the end, mainly because it produces slightly ugly language because it can't conjugate statements. It's kind of neat though, because it's fully customisable and can have different outputs depending on if each tickbox is/isn't chosen.
The app uses a C-like language parser I wrote too. Sample script

While this is probably the best and safest route to take, if a change is going to be made, it is still as lopsided as the current method.
I, and others have mentioned they do as well, use the current checkbox for no other purpose than to show the commentor their comment has been read. But I think all comments on my image should be marked as 'read' when I open the image page. It shouldn't be something I have to indicate.
As far as the '... is helpful' checkbox and the use of a scale to tell how helpful it was (or not, as the case may be) -- those are only useful for critiques. Comments don't have to be helpful, constructive or anything else -- they are simply feedback on how the image impacted that particular individual. They are occasionally not even about the image itself. :p
A checkbox the commentor can check to indicate the comment is to be taken as a critique and is intended to be helpful. Have any critiques be displayed in italics so they can be distiquished easily. This might just be more useful than not knowing if the commentor is intending to be helpful -- or is just thinking with their fingers.

"Noted"? That seems pointless. There is always an assumption that the comment was seen. If it wasn't, there is no issue with the person ranting about how mean it was.

I think a critical and fundamental point on commenting (and voting) on challenge entries, is to establish or define the perspective of the commenter - so many people think the voter/commenter should NOT interpret the image any other way than the photographer intended.
When I am receiving comments, I assume it is the commenters opinion and judgement and take it for what that's worth.
When I am giving comments, I am stating MY opinion, reaction, judgement, etc. If the receiver doesn't agree with it, fine - disregard.
