I'm planning a photo trip up the west coast starting in Utah, if anyone has suggestions of beautiful places to go, or good cheap places to stay etc. please post, it'd be VERY helpful. Thanks a million everyone! :D

I'd have to suggest the Columbia River Gorge. Both sides are beautiful, but the Oregon side has a number of great waterfalls and world-class wind surfing and kite-boarding (meaning there's almost *always* people out there to photograph). Oneonta Gorge ( a small slot-canyon-like area just east of Multnomah Falls) is ripe with photographic opportunities -- for some special shots there, be prepared to wade in the stream and get back into the gorge a little ways.

There are many picturesque places along the Oregon Coast. Yaquina Head at Newport, the Lincoln City Kite Festival.

If you're coming from the east -- the Wallowa Mountains offer some amazing scenes -- take the gondola to the top of Howard Mtn for a view that includes pieces of 4 states.

You don't mention when you're planning your trip, but in October in Port Townsend (a ways up into Washington) are the annual Kinetic Sculpture Races which are a real riot -- lots of colorful.. uhm... "kinetic sculptures" to view/photograph.

Those are the things that first come to mind.

Not much coast in Utah (lol) but as a former Oregonian I'll make a few suggestions.
Yes, the Columbia Gorge is a good area to see. Hood River is good for seeing lots of wind surfers, great fruit, the dam, and locks. You can also ride the Sternwheeler or take a train ride depending on how much time you have.

The coast is good from Tillamook to Astoria. Historic as well as beautiful. Seaside, Canon Beach, Haystack, and Ecola State Park be alert in that area for two DPC'ers. You'll know them by the cameras around their necks! ;)
Not sure how far south your going but Gold Beach is fun, jet boat rides on the Rogue River will give you photo op's for birds, eagles, deer, bear.

I just got back Sunday night from Portland.
Have a great time!

The gorge and the coast are certainly awesome, but don't forget the Cascades and central/eastern Oregon. There are some very cool areas in there. My family has a house in Camp Sherman, which is near Sisters. The whole area is beautiful and I've gotten some awesome mountain photos around there. Also some beautiful desert to the east.

It depends where you're starting, but in California the Pacific Coast Highway from San Simeon to Monterey is really nice. Lots of scenery and tall bridges over gorges that are almost over the ocean. Big Sur and Carmel are gorgeous too.
