My Dad surprised me with a new camera!!! the Rebel XT!!! I was telling him i was saving for one (in addition to saving money to move by September 1st) and well i get a FEDEx today at work ... and a card that says Happy June 30th! Monday was his B-Day ... and instead he got me something! (I've had a rough year - i was supposed to get married - didnt ... my Minolta's manual settings broke - have to send it away - and i have to move by september) hasnt been fun ... anyways - I'm soooo excited ... i cant wait to get home and shoot some photos!!! Hmmm just in time for the MACRO V challenge!
He also threw in a 1GB CF card and a 4GB microdrive! I am soooo stoked!
I love my dad

I'm really really excited! Now here's a question ... It came with the kit lens .. whats a good / economical (if they can be used in the same sentence) Macro lens to invest in? I love shooting macros!

You might think about extension tubes, which fit between the camera and the lens. They heavily reduce DOF, so you have to use a smaller aperture, but you can use the onboard flash to help expose the shot.
I agree with arpita too - the 70-300 would be a good addition to the lens you have.

it looks like a CF card but it's got moving parts inside (a spinning disk like a hard drive) rather than being solid-state. They're less expensive (a little...), but more delicate. |

Ayme - I don't know what "economical" is, but the infamous 28-75 2.8 Tamron is a FANTASTIC lens and it's macro as well. It runs $330, but for a lens that's not bad. lol Maybe that's what you want.

Mav, macro?? Minimum focus distance is 13", which is not terribly macro at 75mm.

Hey Congrats,
As for the macro question, good macro lenses cost about $350 and up.
Sigma has a new 150mm EX f2.8 DG macro lens that got good reviews on current Popular Photography. It's over $400.
You may want to play around with the kit lens. The mark II version on the XT is suppose to be better than the first one and although not a real macro lens, I've done some good close up work with it.
A cheap way is to use a $70 Tamron 1.4X teleconverter to convert the kit to a 70mm ish focal length which with the crop factor turns it into about 100mm. The minimum focal length is unchanged so that maybe a way togo. However the kit lens is suppose to perform poorly at the 55mm end and adding a TC would make that a lot worse. Might be better to use the kit lens and crop instead till you get a real macro lens.

Amy - Congratulations on the camera and for having a wonderful father. I don't know him or you but when a dad does something like that for his child, you know he is the real deal....Think of him every time you take a picture. You know he's thinking of you.

It's a 1:3.9 but it SAYS it's a macro lens. That's what I was sayin. :) It's not 1:1

In the short term, you could perhaps try some close-up filters on the kit lens. Not the best quality but reasonable.

You could consider the Sigma 70-300mm which has a macro feature (1:2, not 1:1), and it's pretty decent... I have that lens and I am pretty pleased with it! You can probably get it for ~160-170$ off the net... Here are a couple of macros I've done with this lens:
  |
What do you have to say about the Tamron Zoom Tele AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 LD Macro A.focus lens. It has the same range, same apertures and all, but it's cheaper! Just the filter diammeter is a bit larger, 62mm against 58 on the sigma!
Is is as good as the sigma!?
I liked the shots from it! |
