Is this a decent printer? What kind of results could I expect? With the right paper, would it come even remotely close to an 8x10 or a 4x6 printed at Ritz Camera or even Wal Mart?

Thanks.

I should add that I can get it for free with mail-in-rebate. But I don't want it if it's just going to be another useless piece of junk taking up space.

I did a quick google search and found this review.

There are probably other reviews on the net as well as places to do side by side comparisons.

I have a canon printer so can't help you from a personal experience perspective.

I have nothing to compare it to when reading that review. I need some real-world opinions. I mean, compared to the print quality at Ritz Camera or Wal Mart, what could I expect from this little printer?

To me, Walmart is a bad comparison unless you have one locally that consistently produces good prints. Most are hit and miss for quality. That said there is merit to comparing the results produced by photo printers with those you get at reputable camera stores.

I would say pretty much any photo printer will give you a very good print compared to the best prints from a camera store/print lab. The print lab will almost always be cheaper due to the cost of printer cartridges especially at the 4x6 size.

Well, the printer is free with mail-in rebate...I'm assuming it comes with ink in it (probably bad to assume that). So I guess even if it's crappy, I'll just get it and see. I can't lose, right?

Since we're have a conversation here, here's my 2 cents.

Epson makes very good photo printers. The R200 is probably no exception. Yes, it will come with ink so the first few prints will be free. What you might want to check for is stats on how many prints you get before you have to replace cartridges. This will tell you the approximate cost/print.

If there is a local store where you can check out the printer they sometimes have samples of what the printer can do.

That review you posted said 420 color 4x6's before you need to replace because it uses 6 ink cartridges instead of the standard 4. So either way, win-win, no?

I have that printer. I have to say it is amazing for the price. One of the photog mags listed it as the top printer under $100.00. I have only used the epson ink and paper with it and I'm happy with the results. I have compared the pics with Walmart and I think I do a better job at home. I can not match the price of their prints though. If you can get it for free then it is a good deal in my mind.

That's what I was thinking. I don't plan to do anything great on it...but it would be nice to have a printer to print a few things up here and there. If I like something, I'll take it to Ritz, and make a bigger print, you know...on some quality paper that will last, etc.

I own the R200, as well as another Epson printer. The R200 is a very good printer for the price. (whats better than free) The results are very good when using the correct paper. I have printed 8X10's that are compareable to prints that I had done at Costco. The only problem could be the cost of replacing 6 ink cartriges. The ones that come with the printer only last about 2/3s as long as replacements. I suggest that you get the R200, pick up some good quality paper and get printing.
