By negative comment I meant the "I don't like the DOF" or "too much nise, try neat image" or "stop using neat image" type comments and not the "this sucks but I have no opinion on why" comments. Sorry for the confusion.

What type of olives do you like?

Blue cheese is great. Especially in a dip with buffalo wings.

Well, WHY do we need weekly DPChallenge themes then? since we should have an "open mind" like some people debated here.
06/29/2005 09:25:21 PM · #62
Kalamata olives, thank you very much!
The reason we need weekly challenges, at least for me, is that some of us newbies like to have a structured format where we are restricted to a particular idea. I haven't yet developed a style or whatever, and being given a direction to follow is helpful sometimes. Plus I learn that things that I didn't think that I could do are not as hard as I thought, and things I thought I could do maybe I need some improvement on.
Besides, a little competition is good for the creative edge.

And as far as rude and condescending and unconstructive comments goes, I try to remember that not all users of this site a)have English as their mother tongue (which may translate into unintentional un-civil comments) and b)not all users of this site feel that they have to sugar-coat their comments. We are not all children here, and as adults, we should be able to accept that not everyone will agree with our vision or opinion, and we should be able to step back from our immediate reactions and think before we really get into it over something that may not be as bad as we first thought.

I just ignore the negative people, it does me no good to worry about them. I do this for a living and I know what pays my bills. I joined because it is different from what I normally do, so it's fun to try to take a particular pic thats not a wedding, portrait or photojournalism work. Let the negative people, and people who don't like a little noise, etc. vote you low and ignore them. Keep on smiling and enjoy this site for what it is and what you can learn from it.

Like this comment on my Metal photo: "Plain. Commercial" Now how is that supposed to assist me take a better photo next time? Or "What is above the clouds? The moon? Is that the fantasy? I don't get it. What am I missing?" on my Fantasy photo? I mean, sheesh ... I didn't know I had to EXPLAIN everything! I just thought the photo look "fantasitcal".

I don't want all "I love it!" comments. I want comments like stdavidson leaves (look at my Darkness and Fantasy photos). I even PM'd him and asked for advise. This is the kind of thing I'm looking for here ...

OK ... I'll step down from my soapbox now ... :)

"Plain/commercial" = i would think it meant your photo is too plain and boring

"What is above the clouds? The moon? Is that the fantasy? I don't get it. What am I missing?" = i would think the viewer has no idea what your photo means, or trying to convey. good photos tells the viewer what it is suppose to be, or the story behind it. bad photos leaves the viewer staring bored.

NOTE: I didnt look at your photos referred to in this thread, so I'm not commenting on your entries. I'm just stating what I would feel, or how i would personally interpret the comments should they are given to my own entries. thanks

Any person who can't tolerate another person's distaste for olives, no matter how many varieties there are, is close-minded. ;)

One of the reasons there seems to be so much negativity on dpc is because constructive criticism inherently involves finding something wrong with a photo. Or, a more PC way to say it, finding something that could be improved. And it is only human nature that we don't like being told about the things we didn't do perfectly in the images we love. There is an unavoidable clash that can be overcome, at least partially, with understanding, patience and, indeed, open-mindedness toward our critics.

Not to be rude, but...
Perhaps you should look at your photos the way others would. Look at your comments and ask yourself why would someone say "this looks plain?" or "what is that?". Perhaps if you can distance yourself from the immediate hurt of the 'negative' comments you may be able to understand where they're coming from. I know it really helps me to be able to do this.
Yes, some people are trolls and they're going to leave rude/cryptic/uncalled for comments. But I honestly believe that most people here are not trying to drag you down. It's possible they didn't have the time to pretty it up or didn't know how else to say it.

It's difficult at times to separate ourselves from our art. But once you're able to self-critique the way that you would critique another's shot, you'll be able to discern that there are indeed images that don't quite 'make the cut' that just happen to lurk next to images that are shining stars.

And remember, not everyone has the same tastes and vision that you do, and a photo that you think very highly of because you know the setup/motivation behind simply may not convey what you think it does or want it to.
It's a part of art - not everyone gets it.

I understand your point ... however, telling me it's boring doesn't help me take a "non-boring" pic next time. And when you enter a challenge such as "fantasy", interpretation is in the artist's mind.

I guess that goes along with this entire thread ... close-minded, etc ... and what exactly IS a negative comment.

Oh ... and I hate olives too, by the way. :)

To saracat -

I don't think you are rude ... I don't let the comments hurt me ... I was using those as an example, and that I understand how other people feel. I know I'm not perfect, because less than 3 months ago, I used to just point a camera and hope for the best. That's why I want the "constructive" comments. I'm not always going to get what I want, of course! :) But this is why I try to be constructive in my comments, to hopefully assist someone the next time they go to take a photo. I'm not a professional by any means. And I do try to look at my photos as others may see them. However, if you look at my comments, different people like different things. All I'm asking is, if you don't like it, tell me exactly what, and tell me how to make it better.

Is that too much to ask for? ;)~ wink, wink

Wow not only a site to view great photography and improve upon your own, but also a site to read witty and timely sarcasm. What fun!

I think SARACAT made a good thread about this. We just have to look at our photo from another person's POV. Example, a Coke bottle may make me feel nostalgic (maybe i grew up with Cokes bottles) and i can relate to Coke bottles a lot, but when i shoot a photo of a Coke bottle and expect other people to feel the same, i would be wrong, wouldnt i?

and as for the "why is my photo boring?" question. same thing. try to look at it from another's POV. what catches my eye in this photo?

NOTE: I take crappy photos myself, and I'm still trying to learn.

I think a lot of the reason that people don't leave specific suggestions for improvement is that they tend to get a lot of backtalk:
'How dare you suggest that my whatsit isn't perfect!' or 'I meant to do it that way and if you don't get my artistic vison then you're >insert your own euphemismIt's the reason so many of the voters are putting sacks on their head during voting.

Personally, I don't look for specific and constructive feedback during the challenges. I think that when most people vote/comment, they're giving you their initial reaction and they don't take the time during a challenge to sit back and say, hmmmm, what could make this photo better and how could I word it so I don't offend this person?
They'd never get through! So if I want detailed input, I'll post in the forum after the challenge. You're more likely to get the help you want that way instead of relying on the wonderful (and very few) people like stdavidson.

Just a thought...
