Their seems to be an influx of negative voting where people will not try and see what a shot offers but just want that initial impact. |

Hey "chafer" why don't you put your creative writing to work and go comment on a few photos...the 7 comments you put in this thread out-number the total comments you've given on other people's photos! (Though you have received 330.)
How's that for negative?

I was telling her I'd ontroduce her to olives that she's never even imagined. She says she won't eat them; she has no interest in olives.
Is she closed minded? Or am I being ridiculous in trying to force olives on her?

I don't like olives hmmm... I do try them every now and then just to make sure though. I think you should just accept her olive hatingness :) |

chafer, just remember, you don't have to be an artist to be a photogragher, you just have to have a camera. |

you yourself are closed-minded. An average vote cast of 4.9 says you think more than not either don't meet the challenge or are not good. You don't comment - only 6 in 30 challenges. Not much to be starting a thread like this over and hardly enough to be criticizing anyone elses comments - good, bad or indifferent. What are you really angry at? lack of a ribbon? Not doing better? Why make an excuse? Tell the truth. Your argument doesn't hold water against your record. |

I totally agree that this site has close minded folks as well as open minded ones, but maybe it's this diversity that makes DPC so awesome. Let's face it, our world contains all sorts of people who don't necessarily think like ourselves. But it's important that we coexist with EVERYBODY. Anyone who criticize others for not agreeing with him/her should also be deemed closed minded.
Personally I think the challenges are nothing more than methods to get people to be creative and competitive, and don't always have to be followed to the teeth. Should voters make a beautiful picture suffer for technicalities? I think not; but it doesn't bother me when my own submissions bomb for wandering slightly outside the title of that challenge. I put my efforts into making art, and I respect ALL the other artists with whom I share this site.

I think this will be my new mantra going forward:
I don't like ____________but I will try them now and again just to make sure.
Love it! Thank you stormy - you made me smile!

Hey...I agree with the original poster. People are close-minded. I don't think I've submitted to a challenge in a while probably a couple months, but it feels like longer -- maybe one or two here and there.
I don't see the point. If my photos sell as prints in the real-world, then I don't know why I would want to have it voted on and get a 4 because I didn't follow the rule of thirds or, GOD FORBID a car in the background on a low DOF shot is (yes, you guess it...) out of focus -- that's another rant all-together though.
Anyway...we all know what wins here anyway...fake skies (read heavily modified through dodging and burning), leaves with rain-drops, and naked girls.
Like I was saying...something took a turn for the worse somewhere.
"This doesn't meet the challenge because the title clearly says 'naturally framed' and your entry is framed by a man-made structure"
"You can't include more than one because the title says 'a' "
blah blah blah ... quit your whining.
and my all-time favorite -- I vote all photos a 4 then go back through them slowly. Sometimes I run out of time, so there's photos that are still at 4, but should get a 9 getting beat by something I had time to go back through and gave it a 7.
HOLY CRAP!!! Look at the damned picture, vote from 1-10, and move on. If it wow's you, there's no reason not to give it at least a 8. Then at the end, go back through and decide which of your 8's is a 9 or a 10.
Anyway...sorry for rambling.

These are the two most contradictory sentences I've seen juxtaposed today! (Maybe even this week!)
I think you've got the right spirit, though. We shouldn't be close-minded! We should be judgmental! |

my average vote is low as well, but i can tell you i very rarely give 3's or 4's... so i know from personal experinece he may not ALWAYS vote low, and regarding commenting, some of us are actually on three or more photography sites, not just this one, and to be able to sit here ALL day and comment would be great, but unfortunately this is not always possible....
i am a little surprised where this thread has gone, so many angry people, i thought it started off as a disscussion between some 'same minded' people who thought the same thing as chafer, looks like some people got on the defensive side... i'm also not as addicted as a lot of you are to the update button, and really don't get upset if i only get in the 4's, but what is upsetting is how some people word their comments, they can really come across very negative...

Contradictory sentences juxtaposed? Nice job yanking my lines out of context to be JUXTAPOSED. Oh gee whiz, I was so dumb to type that whole paragraph of explanation, I should've known someone would find something to intentionally juxtapose.
Wheww I've never used the word juxtapose so many times in one breath.

Geez, KaDi is really on a rampage. The truth hurts, doesn't it? Any ways, my initial comments were pretty innocent. I was just making observations based on my own experience. It's funny how everybody takes things so personally. I'm glad there are a few people out there that agree with what I have to say. These threads really bring out the best and worst in people. |

close-mind·ed (klsmndd, klz-) or closed-mind·ed (klzd-)
adj.
Intolerant of the beliefs and opinions of others; stubbornly unreceptive to new ideas.
Disagreeing with a low score = Intolerant to the opinion of someone else = closed minded
Calling those that don't agree with you closed mined = Closed minded because your opinion is the only right opinion
Scoring an image low = Someone's allowable opinion on a given photograph
Negative comment = Being nice enough to explain your opinion on a photograph you do not like
Your opinion does not make you closed minded nor does sharing your opinion make you closed minded. How you react to differing opinions determines if you are closed minded.
PS what brand olives do you like? I like Armstong but would like to try others (amazing how open minded I am...)

Never tried Armstrong I don't think. But if I did and I didn't like them, I'd try them again, just to be sure. And maybe again after that. :)
