Aside: (To no one in particular)

These threads are starting to sound like a broken record.

the problem is....and i mean no offense to the higher ups... this challenge title really is the pits...obsolete and old and abandoned are two very different things...maybe if the challenge was obsolete or close to it...ir payphones...typewriters...but allowing it to be so wide open makes it more prone to have people judge that an entry is not good enough by their own definition...

i wil admit that i must now go back and revote those that i have already done with a broader understanding of the topic....i never considered the fact that somebodies trash and an obsolete object should be compared equally.

wow that fely good.....

now back to our regularly schedueled program...

Just to throw a joker in the deck; "obsolete", in the pure sense, means "no longer in use". Period. So there's nothing wrong with the challenge title. Literally, if it's abandoned it is obsolete. The "problem" here is that so many people have a misperception as to what "obsolete" really means, and this is stacking the deck against D&L. Unfairly, IMO.

Robt.

Ok. If this is getting to the point where D&L are being taken on. Lets remember the only other important factor..

CHALLENGE -- A test of one's abilities or resources in a demanding but stimulating undertaking.

That implies the interpretation of the rules, title, acceptance of the votes, critique (good and bad) and results.

Why the issue, if it was so difficult to comply then don't enter. If anyone entered and is knocked for it, that has NOTHING to do with the organizers. It is strictly the participants and the voters who interpret and implement a suggested title.

Like darkness, what is it. Absence of light or the color black. Does that mean for darkness anything that shows more than nothing is out of context, certainly NOT.

WHY THE FUSS.

Lets make the argument OBSOLETE and place a ban on further discussion and enjoy the vote and laugh at the results.

Back to the original post...Here is a multi screen drive in showing first run movies!! They used to be a one screen porno palace for many years, now back to start of the art...well, close.

The concept of obsolete is very subjective. My entry was a pay phone. I've had several people comment about how "pay phones are far from obsolete!" and "good try, but they aren't obsolete." Talk about close-minded! Personally, I haven't used a pay phone in at least 10 years...if not longer. As far as I'm concerned, they're obsolete.

Going back to the original posting, yes, I would say that a drive-in movie theater was obsolete...RELATIVE to it's former use. They aren't nearly as common as they used to be. People need to be a little more global in their thinking and not so picky about ridiculous details.

Got it! I have wondered all day why this challenge is presenting such a problem and I finally got it!

When we talk about obsolete and then view a picture supposedly representing obsolescence, we're putting things in a class. The pay phone, drive-in theater, vinyl record ARE NOT representative of an obsolete class....because, as has been discussed here, there are people who still use those things.

But IN THE PARTICULAR, in the INDIVIDUAL case, they DO qualify as "obsolete"...This theater, this phone, the record, is "past it's usefulness" "outdated" "defunct" "un-usable" "cast off"

Just a matter of point-of-view.

And then, there are those entries that intend to be representative of a class, but the object in the image itself is still being used, or is still useful....

Hmmmm....going to cogitate on this a little more.

I tend to agree that some folks seem to be being a bit anal about the definition of 'obsolete', so here are some more.. ;)

in the true sense if it were obsolete we would not be able to photograph it

Good point :-)

My thoughts were more along the lines that by photographing it, we give it a purpose, therefore meaning that it is no longer obsolete. Or maybe in a way we are both saying the same thing.

I think these threads should be obsolete. Bicker about this stuff after the contest is over. I am pretty darn sure it does have an impact on voting.

I have never like these type of threads before a contest, nor the outtakes when the contest is still going on.

I don't think any thread (or photo) should be aloud when a contest is still active.

Perhaps the term OBSOLETE is better applied to CREATIVE thinking, taking on of a good CHALLENGE, making or receiving COMMENTS "good and bad" and ACCEPTANCE of a vote "fair/unfair".

Looking up in the dictionary, out initial perception and DPC description of the meaning of Obsolete are all different. Go with them all is what I believe. All the images fit the challenge, some more than others. Virtually everthing we buy is obsolete, including the computors we use. High tech electronics make everything obsolete as soon as it is released. I accept that and I have no issue. Anything that is broken or does not work as designed also applies.
I think it is beer 30.

I am voting on the quality of the image and the WOW factor. Nothing else!

Off to home!
