I've been part of DPC for about a year now. I've always considered myself creative. I have a lot of friends who are heavily involved in theater, art, web design, etc. Most of them are very open-minded about their various art mediums. The "creative fields" are typically filled with open-minded people. However, one thing I have noticed on DPC, is that despite being an "art" related site (i.e. photography), there are a lot of very close-minded people. Not everyone, by any means, but quite a few. Reading through the threads about the obsolete challenge got me thinking about how picky people are about the challenge rules. Each challenge needs guidelines...but people get so unbelievably caught up in the trivial details that they lose site of the great "art" they are looking at.

There are a lot of great photographers on DPC. I think people need to step back, once in a while, and admire the pictures instead of spending all of their time critizing everything they look at (there are a lot of pessimistic threads/comments out there...I think all of you know what I'm talking about).

Maybe I'm commenting to the wind, but it seems like there is always an overriding negative atmosphere surrounding the site. People need to lighten up and enjoy being part of what I consider the best digital photography site on the internet!

If I see one more thread about how we are all a bunch of close minded, narrow, shallow people that can't vote or comment correctly I'm going to go nuts. Is there something in the water? What is going on?

Louddog...if you're not close-minded, you've got nothing to worry about! I didn't say that everyone was that way.

What's going on is that a lot of perfectly fine photos are getting votes of 3/4/5 when the probably deserve votes of 5/6/7.

There is a negative atmosphere (at the moment) and here you go adding to it! What makes you any better than the rest of us? You have "open-minded" friends...so that entitles you to complain about people complaining? Hmmmm....

I think this thread is a little different than most. I agree with you. It also works the other way as an artist. I have found myself going to some remote location with a beautiful scene and all I can think about is where is something "obsolete" or where are the "leading lines" I become small minded about photography because of my addiction to this site. I have come to realize that I have some great shots, but not necessarily on demand in the confines of a challenge. I have become much better because of this site, but scoring high is not my goal anymore. My goal is to take beautiful pictures. If I can fit it in a challenge, then great.

I completely agree with GeneralE. I associate the low scores with close-mindedness. Although it probably has a lot to do with people just quickly hitting one particular score, quickly, to get through the voting.

One way to counter that problem would be to make the 1-10 "radio buttons" a drop-down...that way people can't just quickly pick a number. I'm sure that's been brought up before, but I really do think it would help.

It looks like I struck a nerve with KaDi. My comment must have been pretty powerful :-) No, I'm not better than any one else here...I don't have any ribbons yet. But that doesn't mean that I can't make careful observations about what I see and read. If you take everything in life personally...you'll eventually go insane. My initial comment was "global." I didn't use any names. If you think you're not a close-minded person...GREAT!...keep up the good work. But if you're close-minded (you know if you are), than maybe you can use my message to open up a bit. That's all I'm trying to do. Pretty harmless, if you ask me.

Do you think closed minded people know they are closed minded?

Would you consider someone that disagrees with opinions other then their own closed minded? You seem to disagree with a lot of people's opinions.

I think we should just change the voting screen to rectify the problem:

Everyone will now be happy.

I am NOT close-minded, and I don't care what anyone else thinks about that.

Obviously just checked out my challenge entries before making this comment. Thanks E :)

Let's put the concept of "closed minds" in perspective here. I have a friend who insists she HATES olives. I have no idea what sort of olives she's been fed, to hate them so, but I can't conceive of anyone hating all olives, it's ridiculous. She's coming to visit later this summer. I was telling her I'd ontroduce her to olives that she's never even imagined. She says she won't eat them; she has no interest in olives.

Is she closed minded? Or am I being ridiculous in trying to force olives on her?

Yes, I think A LOT of close-minded people know they are close-minded. Opinions are important. I'm not saying we should have a lame voting system like the one you proposed (i.e. 1-BAD 10-GOOD). Part of the problem with this site is that there are a lot of people who are very involved and others are are extremely detached...but all of them are voting on the same pictures. Like everyone else, I get good and bad comments on my pictures. However, a lot of the "bad" comments that I get are very negative...over the top. Just like some of you are sick of hearing me talk about close-mindedness (this is the first time I have ever commented on that), I am sick of people being so negative with their scoring and comments. If you don't like a picture, you don't have to say, "This picture is terrible. It has nothing to do with the challenge." A simple, "This picture doesn't really work for me" would work a lot better.

I had heard that there are thousands of different types of olives. True? I like the Jalapeno stuffed olives. MMMMMMM!

Those are my favorite! Have you tried the garlic stuffed ones? Great to eat for lunch when you work in an office of people you'd like to avoid. :)

Any olive is better in a martini IMO.

While it's true that a drop-down menu might help a bit, you must keep in mind that it is most likely only a few of the hundreds of voters out there that vote like that...I think that in the end, after it is all said and done, a photo gets what it deserves. If a photo brinks on the edge of the challenge description, then sure it will get a lot of "doesn't meet the challenge"'s, and it probably won't score as high as it otherwise would, but that's the voters' right, and a lesson easily learned on this site.

True...I think most pictures eventually end up where they should...but the whole scale gets thrown off by the group the quickly gives everyone a 3 or 4. Maybe we should just lower the scale...1-6, instead of 1-10! LOL

LOL... yes bear_music she is certainly closed minded, that 's like saying i hate kodak camera's and someone telling me nikon is great try it, and i so no... im never taking photos with any camera coz i hate the kodak ones.....lol......

and on another note, we will all pick the closed minded people, they will be the ones thinking we are complianing, when in actual fact a certain few here are trying to state the obvious and rectify it, most people get angry or cranky when they are being told the truth about them selves....

Well said roadrunner. The truth hurts.
