Is the 18-55mm kit lens an USM version?
All right, the manual doesn't say so, but canon's website doesn't say it so as well (the website only has it on the USM version).
Also, the lens itself doesn't show any USM markings on it!

Am I lost, or there are two version, USM and non-USM ones?

There are two versions, you're right.

there are 3 versions...the original 300D version, the 350D versionand the USM - you can tell it easily because you can MF while it is in AF mode.

Lose it, and get the Sigma 18-50 2.8 EX DC lens. You can thank me later.

I have the lens, and I'm planing to keep it as a backup. The thing is, there's an article on a very popular brazilian photography magazine, that states taht the kit lens is the USM version, so I'm writting them saying it's not! But just to make sure!

But the sigma seems to be a good choice! but talk about pricy, it's 500 bucks! hehehe
I'll stick with the kit lens for sum more!

the japanese kit includes the USM lens...so it may be a which nation is it sold in thing.

I got the Sigma for $420 new off ebay. i skipped the kit lens - $100 more to the kit price, or get one off ebay for $70 or less (usm version is $150). The sigma is faster (2.8 all the way, not 3.5-5.6) and much higher image quality, as good as the $650 Canon 17-40L 2.8-4 lens.
