Another idea, opposite to the 24hour challenges people have been talking about, is to make a challenge that lasts somewhere from 2-4 weeks, but is a series of multiple related photographs depicting the challenge theme. An example would be something like:
Self Portrait:
Create a series of 6-8 pictures that paint a picture of who you are. These pictures may or may not feature you in the frame, but should be presented in such a way that they give the viewer some insight to an aspect of your life.
or
Places:
Pick one place and create a series of 4-6 photographs that portray this place in a particular light, or that convey a particular emotion such as fear, happyness, sadness, etc...
(I think my descriptions need some work but hopefully you get the idea)
I think this could be benificial becasue:
1) It would probably have far fewer entries than current challenges
2) Fewer entries would allow people more time to vote on the images, and to form more concrete oppinions of other peoples work.
3) More time to think about and create a series of images would lead to higher overall quality.
It might not work becasue:
1) Presenting multiple images on a page would probably require some new kind of coding to determine layout, and scrolling, either horizonal or vertical.
2) It would require people to think about voting in a whole new way to not only encompass an individual photo, but also the relationship between the pictures, and the presentation/layout/order of the pictures.
I'd love to hear other's thoughts on this, while I know it may not be feasible I still think it would be a fun way to do a challenge.

That's a really good idea. Not sure if anyone has suggested it before but it's new to me, and very neat.
It might even be fun to have a free study in which you need to put together a bunch of pictures as part of a theme... it would definitely be interesting to see!
But I totally appreciate that it might be pretty difficult technically to make such a challenge happen.... |

I think the multiple image submission per topic is a great idea, however I would prefer that only 1 image is submitted per week. We could do this for 4 weeks or so with the scores carrying over/ added up. This would show who has the most consistent quality. Maybe? |

Interesting idea. I like the idea of not only coming up with, but also viewing and voting on a small group/collection. I think you're right, the idea needs refinement of details, but sounds kinda neat. It would definitely be a new twist on things, and may provide some fresh added stimulation for people, especially those that may be wondering, or contemplating the 'next step', or are feeling in a rut. Good suggestion for discussion, IMO.

I'm not sure that submitting 1 image per week is a good idea - if you're trying to build up a specific something with a series of images, you need to see them all together. how would you know in the voting from week to week which images were meant to be viewed together? |

I like the idea, but can not see how the voting can remain anonymous if such a challenge were to happen. After the first challenge ended and the photographers were revealed, each subsequent challenge with same location but with a different angle/tilt would immediately reveal who did what. Just a thought.

There've been quite a few "ongoing projects" which people have participated-in via the forums.
I think voting would be difficult to set up with the current site structure, although if it's a member-only challenge, it wouldn't be hard for each person to create a specific portfolio folder for it to display the set of photos.
Maybe a few of you should create your own version -- just post the topic and rules here, and make a new thread where people can comment on the submissions (en lieu of formal voting) -- and see how it works. |
