I don't know if it because I have become more aware of the birds in our yard since trying to photograph them for the bird challenge; or whether the birds are aware that the challenge is over and feel safer but there are certainly a variety of them showing up. These were all taken from the advantage of my rocker on the front porch. Just thought I'd share some of the shots. There were many visitors that did not get photographed: Cooper's Hawk, Baltimore Oriole, Barn Owl as, well as, a number of the usual visitors such as Cardinals , Finches, and Grosbeaks. Is this somewhat of an exceptional year for birds? I don't ever remember seeing such a variety as I have this year.
As usual, any comments or criticism is greatly appreciated.

i belive thats a bearded hen....kinda rare i think...excellent shot. she must've been close for the flash to work that good. i love taking photos of turkeys because thier feathers are so colorful. so far i havent been able to photograph a live one due to my hubbys turkey hunting habit..i just have to be quicker on the shutter finger than he is on the trigger finger!

Thanks for the identification, Cher.

Yes. She was close. Less than 20 ft. I was not aware of the fine color details of these birds till I photographed this one. And yes, we do have our share of hunters after them every season. There are two packs(don't know what to call a group of turkeys) of them that roam across the street and also visit our front yard. I would like to have gotten a photo of the male in full array but was too slow in getting the camera. They sure are skitish creatures. . . and noisy.

I think its kind of unusual to get to see that big a variety of birds in one place. I always see the same big fat bluebird at my house. We occasionally have this pair of ducks that waddle into our neighborhood or hang out by the pool on rare occasions. Other than that there are pidgeons that try to live in my attic or on very rare occasions I see some type of crane fly over, but never all within a short time period. Just that Bluebird, allllllll the time.

Edited to add: I guess I should have mentioned I think the photos are great.

yes they are skittish.they have excellent eyesight and they can see ur eye twitch at a (i think this is right)1000 yards! they are refered to as a "flock" i believe. gobblers(males) are very pretty to photograph in full fan(or spread) of the tail. they have even more color on the face with very bright reds and blues. every time i see a gobbler i always think of the USA flag.

Ok! Flock. . . that was easy enough!

You and Ben Franklin hugh? Wasn't he the one that wanted it as our national bird.

Laura, We also have duck and an occasional crane also. That is what seems to make this year so spectacular. I don't know what the attraction is around our neighborhood but they (the birds) are sure showing up this year more than ever. We do have feeders and bird baths, flowers and a wooded area across the street. But that has all been around before this year. Maybe it is the 90 degree heat wave we have been having!

It is also funny because I know exactly when the Cooper's Hawk is lurking in the neighborhood. . . there is not a peep outside nor a bird to be seen!
