ummm...'what's in a name?'...'a rose by any other name would smell as sweet'....'puddintane, ask me again I'll tell you the same'......why do people call facial tissues 'kleenex'?

I'm not seeing the irritation factor I guess.....

Pssh you guys have it easy, try having Shi as a last name.... It's the only thing I don't like about being asian.

Who cares? Leica has the coolest lens names anyway:
ELMARIT-R, PC-SUPER-ANGULON-R, VARIO-ELMAR-R... Better than Canon/Nikon's jumble of letters.

Thats not bad, it could be alot worse. My husband has told me stories about guys he worked with and their names. Also, we went to Japantown in SF a month or two ago and I had to take my husbands photo in front of the restaurant named "FUKU Sushi". I kid you not.

Also, Fetor, I agree I've thought the Nikkor thing didn't make much sense either, but I can't say that it agitated me quite the way it has you, lol.

To add to the thread hijack, my last name is Go.

If I get a penny for each time someone makes a "stop" joke, I might not be a millionaire, but I would be able to have a few more lenses.

I now pre-empt, by saying that I fully intend to name my first-born child "Van."

My father was friends of inventor Bill Lear, who (he swears) named his daughter "Crystal Shanda Lear"... I don't know if it's true, but I want it to be.

As for the "nikkor", I believe that predates "Nikon"; I think they were making lenses for others long before they started making cameras, and that "Nikon" was a spinoff from the parent company. Anyone know this for sure? I'm too lazy to google it up.

R.

There was a Ura Hogg too. Native Texan here. Learnt it in school!

What about some annoying boy names? Bubba?

Actually, I know a man named Richard Little (not the comedian) and everyone calls him "Chicken" but he also went by Dick. Wouldn't want to do that one last name first!

I used to have friend whose surname was Fluck - I could never understand why her father changed the family name to West but then again I was only 8 at the time!

I also taught a girl recently who was called Jezebel - thought this could cause afew problms later in her life.

Know someone called Michael Finn - naturally called Mickey

And someone called Jimmy Riddle - *for USA friends it's cockney rhyming slang for piddle which means taking a leak!
:{)

edit - had to add this. Maybe it is a von neumann machine that uses itself to make more of itself over and over again, until the whole Earth is consumed. So, not necessarily with evil intent. However the machine in its nature would destroy the planet in its own purpose of existence, much like a virus. It must be stopped.
